Will I find out the sex at my anomaly scan?

Hi all
I have my anomaly scan on Monday, I will be 18+3 weeks.
I have booked a meal out with my family on the same day to let them all know if it is a girl or a boy .. as this is the only day I have of work that week and I'm busy the following weeks. I'm just now worried that I won't be finding out the sex as I have read that sometimes the scanner will not offer.. did you experience this?
Thanks!

My experience was that they didn't mention it, I asked towards the end if we could find out, the sonographer then had a look and told us. So you might have to ask I guess, but they should be able to have a look and see if they can tell you. Good luck!

It depends on the hospital, some will tell you if you ask and some won't.

Wolfiefan · 25/07/2017 12:22

My first pg the policy was that they wouldn't tell you. And the sonographer may not be able to see anyway.

purplesippycup · 25/07/2017 12:28

Some hospitals do and some don't.

Not sure why some won't have a quick peek once they have done the important stuff but some just have that policy.

My hospital will have a look, but you have to ask them specifically. They like to keep it completely neutral so they don't spoil it for those who don't want to know, until the patient says they would like to know.

I've always had no problem being told. I think it's normal to find out at this scan if you want to. I've heard of some hospitals not revealing but that would be unusual.

loveulotslikejellytots · 25/07/2017 12:30

Ours asked at the start if we wanted to know 'if' she could see. We did. Dd was all scrunched up so the lady doing the scan said that she was 85% sure it was a girl. It's harder to see girls bits apparently, especially the way dd had her legs scrunched up.

We had another scan at 25 weeks to check for something else, and again the sonographer asked us if we knew what we were having. Told her the story above, so she had another look for us and confirmed that she was almost certain we were having a girl. We stuck to mostly neutral stuff anyway!

But ask at the beginning. They won't offer just in case you don't want to know.

The hospital I had my 3 DC at offered to look to see baby's sex at the anomaly scan every time.

But it does depend on baby's position. DS1's legs were firmly crossed at his anomaly scan and the sonographer couldn't see a thing down there. They said that they had no idea whether baby was a boy or a girl.

Bear2014 · 25/07/2017 12:31

Ours were gagging to tell us. They asked us if we wanted to know the sex at the 12 week scan too but said they couldn't be sure (they got it right). Don't know if that was sonographer or hospital specific.

MsPassepartout · 25/07/2017 12:33

Not sure why some won't have a quick peek once they have done the important stuff but some just have that policy.

I read somewhere that not telling policies are to do with concerns that babies might be aborted if they're the "wrong" sex.

RiverTam · 25/07/2017 12:35

London hospital here, they don't tell you, I assume because of high proportion of cultures that have a preference for a boy.

YoureNotASausage · 25/07/2017 12:59

My London hospital happily told us when we asked.

DoubleHelix79 · 25/07/2017 13:01

Not all London hospitals refuse to tell you. My sonographer told me without hesitation. (This was in an area with many people from India and Pakistan)

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 25/07/2017 13:03

Ours don't tell you. When questioned why they said because of selective abortions/chance you will sue if they get it wrong.

I had a private scan a week later and happily signed a disclaimer saying I wouldn't sue if they got it wrong (they didn't).

leafv · 25/07/2017 13:07

Some will, some won't, some might be willing to but just can't tell at the scan because of position x

sidesplittinglol · 25/07/2017 13:31

My London hospital told us too. They asked at the start of the scan if we wanted to know.

Lemondrop99 · 25/07/2017 13:35

My London hospital was more than happy to tell us. The only caveat is, if it's not obvious, they won't waste ages trying to work it out as the main point of the scan is to check for anomalies.

Our sonographer didn't mention it until the very end, then asked if we wanted to know. We'd already found out from a private scan but said yes, for further confirmation.

FrogsSitonLogs · 25/07/2017 14:19

Our London hospital only told you if you specifically asked. They didn't ask if you wanted to know. I do know of a few that won't tell you to prevent sex preference abortions.

Bear2014 · 25/07/2017 14:30

Ours is in London too (Kings). Since you can get a private gender scan pretty cheaply anywhere these days, i think the selective abortion thing is much less valid.

Mrsknackered · 25/07/2017 14:56

London hospital told me at 17 weeks that DS1 was a boy.
The hospital up north I had DS2 also told us at the 20 week scan.

RiverTam · 25/07/2017 15:40

That's interesting, Bear, Kings must have changed their policy since DD was born (2009).

LadyPenelope68 · 25/07/2017 15:51

Our local hospital doesn't tell you, even if you ask.

DappledThings · 25/07/2017 16:38

River King's did change. Friend there in 2012 was not told, we were offered in 2016 but chose not to. At nuchal scan with DC2 this they offered then as well. Still declined!

FlightlessBird · 25/07/2017 16:40

Mention at the beginning of the scan that you would like to find out gender if possible. Our hospital will tell, but only if the mother asks.
