Struggling to drink

I'm almost 9 weeks pregnant with my first and apart from the all day nausea (!) and tiredness, I am really struggling with fluids. I can't seem to bring myself to drink anything. The thought of water, fizzy drinks or squash makes me feel sick. I have a cup of tea in the morning and sometimes before I go to bed but am struggling to drink any more than one glass of something else during the day. Anybody else? I had some pineapple juice yesterday and actually enjoyed it but looking at the calories in that, it's probably not the best thing to have.

At this point, anything you can get down is fine. Don't stress about calories etc. I was on watered down OJ until 17 weeks.

I have hyperemesis and have only drunk coke and water for 9 weeks and have lost a stone. Don't worry about calories in juice! Do you know how harmful it is to be dehydrated? More harmful than a few extra calories!

YoureNotASausage · 24/07/2017 11:05

Fuck the calories if you're not taking fluids!!!

I found milk drinkable and by extension, banana milk and ice whizzed up in the nitribullet.

Sparkling water was ok for a while.

My new discovery... watermelon. Amazing and such a relief.

Kittysparks1 · 24/07/2017 11:10

Try ice poles also, foods high in water content if you can manage them. Honestly do not worry about calories. Just get in your system what you can. For me it was full fat Coke. Absolutely hated the stuff before pregnancy, ended up being the only thing I could keep down. Luckily my hg trailed off by about 20 weeks and so did the need for full fat Coke.
Good luck x

Have you tried flat lemonade? 7up helped a little for me. Orange lollies too, but only Tesco finest ones. Another thing was having a bottle of water with me at all times & drinking a little whenever I could face it. I was still dehydrated but not as badly as with DS2 when I couldn't even get out of bed. I ended up having a phone consultation with the GP & sending DH to pick up the prescription/medication. Things got easier after that.

This time round I'd spend 10+ minutes just staring at the water before taking one sip because I knew I couldn't let myself get that bad again. It's ridiculous how hard just drinking water can be! I'm 23 weeks now & have been able to drink water normally since about 16w. I'm still not quite eating normally but the constant nausea has gone now.

You will get better eventually but don't be afraid to ask for medication if it means you can take care of yourself & your baby!

MrsMP123 · 24/07/2017 11:47

Thanks everyone. I'm trying some thicker fruit juice today which seems to be okay at the minute. I really don't fancy any ice poles or lollies :-(
AGnu I know what you mean about water being difficult, I just can't face it at all.
I am conscious that I should be getting around 8 glasses a day but at the moment, that just seems impossible. Going to have to really try though

I was hospitalised last week due to dehydration, had to have 5 bags of fluids and lots of anti emetics. Get checked for ketones if you're drinking that little!

I've found irn bru and water is all I can manage, if I gulp I throw up, small sips! Who cares about calories/sugar if you aren't getting what you need

Lemondrop99 · 24/07/2017 12:08

Hydration is so important. I found sipping Lucosade helped a bit. Just drink anything you can stomach. I ended up with AWFUL constipation from not drinking enough due to vomiting and sickness, and trust me. You don't want that.

Try liquidy foods too like soup, jelly etc.

Maybe talk to your GP about trying cyclizine if your nausea is so bad it's preventing you drinking?

MrsMP123 · 24/07/2017 12:14

I'm not sure if it's the nausea that is stopping me drinking or if it's an aversion to certain drinks. I haven't been sick at all over the weeks, just feeling yucky on and off all day. Sips of drinks seem to be the key though as you mentioned Tormundsbrow. Also, a straw can sometimes help.
I didn't realise the problems that not drinking enough could have though so definitely need to man up and get some fluids into me!

I find it difficult as well. I generally just drink lots of variety so just a small amount of different things. Flavoured milk, banana and yoghurt drinks, grape juice....

endofthelinefinally · 24/07/2017 13:00

Ice lollies and sparkling water through a straw.

TheresALight · 24/07/2017 13:05

Hi, have you tried drinking with a straw? I couldn't drink anything without a straw in my last pregnancy and as soon as I found out I was pregnant again this time I was exactly the same

Thenorthbloodywellremembers · 24/07/2017 13:11

I've found a posh ginger cordial OK with the nausea.

Kr1stina · 24/07/2017 13:17

It might be worth trying different herbal and fruit teas , I liked peppermint when I was pregnant.

You can buy multi flavour boxes in the supermarket.

Were you overweight before you got pregnant ? I wondered because you are bothered about the calories in fruit juice.

Kr1stina · 24/07/2017 13:18

Sipping very hot or icy cold drinks might also work.

MrsMP123 · 24/07/2017 13:37

I'm always worried about what I eat and am always dieting! Obviously not dieting now but trying to eat healthy. My BMI is within the normal range. Just worried about taking in too many calories with drinks as well as food

I know what you mean. I struggled to find a drink that I actually wanted to drink 8 glasses of a day. Like you I wasn't vomiting it just turned my stomach. I just tried lots of different drinks including coke. And just drank whatever I fancied as it's better than being dehydrated

2ducks2ducklings · 24/07/2017 13:58

Drinking was the hardest part of my sickness. For a good few weeks, all I could manage was chocolate milk- talk about calorific!
I can't drink cold drinks out of glasses unless I have a straw, mostly I have to drink straight out of the bottle 🤢
The one think I do really enjoy is a blue slush puppy or water in a plastic glass from a water cooler. I sound like a complete diva, but it's been hard going.

Beachbaby2017 · 24/07/2017 14:18

Ice cubes are helping me drink enough these days. That and fuzzy drinks, although those make my heartburn worse so I have to be careful.

Beachbaby2017 · 24/07/2017 14:18

Fizzy not fuzzy!

everythingissoblinkinrosie · 24/07/2017 14:20

I couldn't drink anything not even water, even filtered.
I ended up on hospital.
Speak to a gp very soon about this.
On the road to recovery I ate as much watery food as I could which was basically lettuce and cucumber.
