20 week scan - terrified

So today is the day we've been waiting for for what seems like forever, my 20 weeks scan this afternoon. Is it normal to be so scared?. Would be good if people could share their experiences.

Nearly wet myself holding in the water. The sonographer talked through the whole thing, explaining what she was looking at and saying that it all looked fine. It is nerve wracking but I'm sure if anything was terribly wrong it would have been picked up by now. Good luck!!

I had a delightful experience! The staff were lovely and kind and had a sense of humor too. They were both men, and sprung a cervical check on me at the end, to see if I was at risk of delivering early (internal ultrasound) so that was not the most fun, but mostly because I didn't know when I was supposed to take my knickers off! The weird things we worry about! My husband was there too, and we had a bit of a cry when we saw everything. It's so wonderful we have such good access these days! Hope it goes well for you, remember to ask them to explain everything to you!

We have had three scans. 12w, 16w private gender and then our 20w -
Our 20w one was by far our favourite. Sonographer was lovely, absolutely no rushing and everything was fully explained. It's fascinating just how much they can see and measure. We loved it, try not to worry and enjoy. Hope all goes well for you Smile

Unlike pp I didn't need a full bladder and didn't need an internal scan. It is nerve wracking as they look at all the organs and she said from the start she would say straight away if something looked abnormal. I'm sure all will be Well, try and enjoy it!

I remember being in the car park outside and wanting to vomit I was that scared. No reason to be scared but so worried something would be wrong. My partner knows what to do and I was silent the whole time sat in the waiting area shaking, he just held my hand.
Did not relax until the end when they told me it was all ok. And the relief was overwhelming.
The sonographer was amazing and showing us all the bits and pieces.
Good luck with your scan today! Totally normal to be scared. X

Totally normal to be scared. It just means that you care and understand how important an anomaly scan is.

Good luck :-)

Milliemoo37 · 24/07/2017 11:33

I had to have mine redone as baby was in a difficult position so they couldn't finish all the checks. The second time was a lot nicer and relaxed even though I almost wet myself, I wanted to have done everything I could to get baby in a good position. The lady scanning me told me to empty my bladder halfway through as she couldn't finish the checks, she could see baby a lot better with an empty bladder.
We found out we were having a little boy whilst there, I'll never forget the words 'Oooh and there's the penis!'

I think it's normal to be terrified. I had my worst sickness before my 12 week scan and I know it will be the same with the 20 week scan. I will just get too worked up about it.
Are you feeling movements yet?

Thank you for all your lovely stories, I feel a lot better now realising that it's normal to be worried. It's such a relief to have got to 20 weeks as we lost twins to possible chromosomal abnormalities so I'm terrified of being told something wrong. Trying to think positive on our way to the hospital now.

Just to update, everything went very well and we have a very healthy happy baby girl. The sonographer was brilliant and was very chatty commenting on everything she was looking at and explaining why. Overall a very positive experience.

Sally - I'm really happy for you. Now go and buy some pink baby clothes to celebrate :-)
