Can dogs tell you're pregnant?

Just that really!

I'm 17 weeks pregnant.

My 1 year old GSD has become quite loving and cuddly over the last few weeks and I was wondering if she knows there is a baby or at least something different?

She is usually quite boisterous and bouncy with me but seems to have calmed right down for me! (I'm not complaining!)

Has anyone's pet changed during their pregnancy?

I have a GSD X who is normally very boisterous with me and likes sitting on my lap but she has calmed down a lot around me since I've been pregnant. She doesn't sit on my lap anymore but likes sitting next to me and resting her head on my bump!
That could just be that we've told her to be gentle with me now though?

Gimmeallthecoffee · 23/07/2017 11:58

In my experience yes. In my first pregnancy both mine and a relatives dog would both come and sit next to me and wouldn't budge.

My own dog (a bouncy Labrador) would actually rest his head on my bump!

purpleprincessa · 23/07/2017 12:02

@Rogue1234 That's exactly what she does!! She drapes her leg over me in a very protective position!!

I've attached a pic because she's just being so lovely!!

I don't have much experience with dogs, but from as soon as I was pregnant (a couple of days before taking the test) my cat, who is usually quite standoffish with me but adores my DH, became really "cuddly", would want to sit on my lap for hours, much friendlier than usual. Could just be us projecting, but it did seem like he knew something was different.

She can almost certainly hear the baby's heartbeat so yes, she will know.

I mean she's a lovely girl anyway but so much calmer and protective! Can't be a coincidence?

I'm convinced my older cat knows (the young one is a nutter so she wouldn't have a clue).

Disclaimer - yes, I'm a crazy cat lady.

TickleMcTickleFace · 23/07/2017 12:22

My dog definitely knew when I was pregnant before I'd even got a BFP. She stuck to me like glue and followed me everywhere including the toilet Blush can they really hear the baby's heartbeat? When I was in the last trimester I used to lie on my side on the sofa and my dog would lie on top of me with her head on my bump. She's a terrier so fit quite neatly curled up.

I have nothing against cats, I just love the dumb loyalty you get from dogs!! Cats make you work too hard!!

I'm pretty sure my dog can tell, and I've only just had a BFP. He's been quite cuddly (very unlike him!) for the last week or so and was when I was pregnant earlier this year. Unfortunately that one ended in a mc at 9 weeks, but interestingly he was weird with me from about when the spotting started. Dr dog knew it had all gone wrong before I did. Hmm

purpleprincessa · 23/07/2017 12:51

Aww sorry to hear about that but congratulations and I hope everything goes well!! I think we all pretty much agree that our dogs (and cats) know us better than we know ourselves! Amazing!

Our pup was very careful when he met my best friend for the first time and she was 6 weeks pregnant at the time.

MineKraftCheese · 23/07/2017 16:36

My DB and SIL's dog has gone very overprotective of SIL since she got pregnant. Waiting by the door for her and cuddling her all the time! Pre-pregnancy the dog was more of a daddy's girl.

AgentCooper · 23/07/2017 16:43

It's really strange! I don't have a dog but when I was about 8 weeks I went over to SIL and BIL's and their normally very rambunctious, yappy wee dog didn't jump on me once and actually got up on the couch and curled into my stomach quietly. I thought I was imagining it but now I'm not so sure!

And MIL's lovely but very nippy wee westie hasn't bitten me once in the 28 week period Grin

thegoodnameshadgone · 23/07/2017 17:09

I'm hoping my cats can tell! I've got one week to wait and see but one (my boy) is super attached to me this week and just wants to get on me knee when he never normally bothers!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/07/2017 17:21

I am sure our cats knew when I was pregnant with ds1. They took to following me every time I went to the bathroom - I'm not sure why they thought I couldn't be trusted to do that specific thing unsupervised, but they clearly did. They's run upstairs after me, and sit on the edge of the bath, directly opposite the loo, and watch me.

If I ever managed to get upstairs without them following me, they'd come charging up in a panic, as soon as they realised I might be having a unsupervised wee.

It didn't happen in subsequent pregnancies - maybe I had proved I could be trusted.

MattBerrysHair · 23/07/2017 17:37

My cat girls knew when I was pregnant and they became incredibly cuddly. Most animals have a far superior sense of smell and they can probably smell the change in our hormones.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 23/07/2017 22:19

Have three cats and a dog. With my first two babies and now this pregnancy they all were drawn t me and would not leave me alone.. both, loo, sofa, kitchen garden you name it.
I would wake up from a nap with a cat paw on my face and the dog tattooed to my side.

Lemondrop99 · 24/07/2017 14:03

My GSDx hadn't the foggiest. But then he's to most self absorbed ed dog I've ever met 😆 I'm positive he has no idea that I'm pregnant

HarriboHarribo · 24/07/2017 14:25

My dog was the first to know! He was all for my other half and never paid me too much attention. Then all of a sudden he bevame very clingy to me and when my other half came near me he would try to get inbetween us and if he kissed my cheek our dog would literally run from across the room to get inbetween us and get him off me 😂 2-3 weeks later we found out we were expecting! Now at 36 weeks nothing has changed he's still clingy and sometimes even places his paws and face on my belly as if he knows his lil sister is in there hahah
