Would like to know people's thoughts about their first scan. This is my first baby and need to decide what scan we want - just a dating scan or a Dowds Syndrome, Edwards and Patau scan? What do most people go for?

I had downs screening for both. The outcome wouldn't be any different for us And we would have continued regardless but want to be prepared.
With my first the told me there and then that the neck measurement looked good and that we shouldn't have anything to worry about. Bloods came in a week later showing the risk as really low.
With my second my scan was around 3 weeks ago and they couldn't do the nuchal measurement because baby was wiggly but not laying in the right place. It meant that we had to have a quad blood test last week, so we are still waiting. It is worrying and if it wouldn't make a difference to you then the worry can be unnecessary. But for me it was wanting to be prepared.

The best way to think about it is like this....bearing in mind it doesn't tell you for certain, just a risk factor.

If you got a high risk result would you want to find out for certain? (Have further testing).

Or would you just want to be prepared that you may have a baby with the condition?

Or if you got a high risk result but didn't want further testing, would it then stress you out for the rest of your pregnancy?

Or would it not matter to you either way? In which case do you need to really know the risk factor?

Hey,

We had an early scan at 6 weeks just to check as I was having a little cramping. We are getting the Harmony Test done privately at 10 weeks. It's a simple blood test that tests for what you mentioned. It also can tell you the sex from the blood test at 10 weeks. We just wanted to do it earlier rather than later to make sure we had enough time to digest any news or make decisions should we need to.
Good luck with everything. :)

We had the full scan. We knew that if baby was classed as high risk we would want further tests to find out for certain.
It really depends on how much you wish to know and the actions you will take.

I haven't had my scan yet but I've opted for just the dating scan. Knowing a "risk" factor (I prefer the word chance) wouldn't change anything for us so I'm not bothered about finding out

cakes I've just realised I have used the word risk throughout my entire post! When I talk to women at work I always use chance and more/less likely, so I am really quite Blush I have used risk here!

I'll blame it on the 3 hour sleep I had last night!

We didn't have the screening. Wouldn't have made any difference to us either way and wouldn't have gone for a diagnostic test if the 'risk' came back high so seemed like it would just cause more worry than anything.

To add, my only concern if my baby had Down's syndrome would have been heart problems etc but those would be picked up at the anomaly scan.
