Anyone else late pregnancy and still transverse?

I'm almost 36 weeks pregnant with DC2 who has been transverse for pretty much the entire pregnancy (except for a brief excursion to breech at around the 30 week mark - has since flipped back to being transverse again).

I'm looking at a possible ELCS this time around anyway due to my previous EMCS with DS1 and the fact that DC2 is measuring big according to growth scans, although I'm keeping an open mind about everything at this stage.

I have been doing some reading about transverse babies and it all sounds a bit scary e.g. possible cord compression if you go into labour and baby is not out within 10 minutes, and stories about some women being admitted to hospital for their last weeks of pregnancy for that specific reason.

I have an appointment with my consultant along with another growth scan later this week and will be asking lots of questions if baby is still transverse, but I just wanted to see if anyone is or has been in a similar position and what their personal experiences were like?

DS1 was a textbook "head down" baby the whole way through so this is all very new to me!

Hi, my baby was transverse at my 34 week scan and the consultant said that if at 36 weeks, she hadn't moved, they would look to book me in for a c-section and said you just can't deliver a transverse baby vaginally unless they manually turned her but apparently, most like to pop back into the position they're comfortable in Hmm.

I'd go for your scan and then be straight to the point with the consultant. Ask what their plan is! Good luck :-) x

Hi there. My DD was oblique transverse (slightly diagonal) throughout my entire 3rd trimester until the day she was delivered at 39+4 by ELCS. I tried all the exercises, swimming, moxibustion by an acupuncturist but she wouldn't budge.

I was actually admitted to the antenatal ward at 38 weeks, as they said that if my waters broke at home it was potentially dangerous for cord prolapse. I wasn't happy about it but they made their case that it was the best thing to do. They will generally section you at 39 on the dot in these cases - the only reason they made me wait is that it fell over Christmas and they don't do electives then! I was actually slightly relieved to have an ELCS as she was 9.5lb with a big round head!

Baby might still move, especially with it being a second baby and that he/she has flipped a bit already. I'm currently 36 weeks with no.2 and this baby turned head down last week, after having been transverse since 28 weeks.

Good luck!

DS was transverse until very late pg (he moved on the day that they were going to admit me at 37w but didn't stay that way). Your consultant will tell you more but I was told by mine to phone an ambulance at any serious sign of labour and stay on all fours with your bottom higher than your head until the ambulance arrives (! not easy in late pg).

Good luck. Smile

Mine was transverse at that stage too. Turned at either 39 or 40 weeks!
When mine was transverse I was reading lots too, and also asked on here and quite a few people said they had the same situation and the baby didn't turn til the very end. At the time, the consultants didn't seem too worried either, as they said the same thing the posters on here said, that many babies just don't bother turning til they're ready to go.
Some posters on here said they even felt the turn when the baby went head down.

Take a bag to your appointment as 36 weeks is usually the latest that they can allow you to be at home. Again if waters go get head down, bum up and call ambulance for immediate attendance. Hope all goes well.

Another transverse baby here (well, she was). I had a position scan at 36+5, ECV (she was turned) at 37+0, she turned back that evening. Admitted at 37+5 in case I went into labour (I didn't; my family tend to have long pregnancies), elcs at 39+1. It wouldn't have been my first choice, but I got a healthy baby (whose head later reached the 99.6th centile, so I'm not too sad not to have pushed her out!), and no tearing/scarring/pain down below. Recovery was good, better than many of my friends, possibly due to the planned section (they had emcs).

While I was in hospital, I was examined every day. Initially I was told that if DD went head down, I could go home. It became clear she was doing loops; we managed every possible position - apparently footling breech (where a foot is over the cervix) is even less ideal than transverse. As this became clear, I was told I could only go home if she stayed head down for 48 hours, which never happened - just to say that if your little one does go head down (I think DD managed it at one point), it doesn't mean they'll stay there.

Thank you all so much for your responses - really useful to hear about your personal experiences!

I will definitely have lots of questions for my consultant if he/she is still transverse at this week's appointment and it's helpful to know what to potentially expect. I'm not too worried about an ELCS (hopefully it would be a bit calmer than my EMCS was!) but would really prefer to avoid early admission to hospital given I still have two weeks left at work and haven't been away from toddler DS for more than a couple of nights. I will be doing everything I can think of to try to persuade DC2 to shift!

I used the spinning babies website and found some of their recommended techniques quite useful for getting Baby into a more favourable position! Good luck, OP! x

Thanks right - I am about to become Spinning Babies' most frequent visitor (although it currently feels as though I am trying to spin a baby elephant!)

Thanks again for all your responses - just a quick update, went for my scan today and baby is now head down in perfect position! Fingers crossed he/she decides they are comfortable there Smile

How are you doing? Is baby still in situ?

ZigAZigAhh · 14/08/2017 10:05

Hi Diamonds - baby was still head down and nearly fully engaged at my 38 week check so it's all looking good (fingers crossed!) Smile now playing the waiting game...
