Advice needed; should I accept induction at 40+10 tomorrow?

Hi ladies. The title says it all really. I was due on 7th July with our first baby. He's not budging. So far have tried a fair few things to bring on labour. Had one stretch and sweep last Wednesday which spurred on some cramping and a tiny bit of a show but I've just had intermittent cramps since then. MW said that my cervix "wasn't doing much" at the time.

I'm booked in for an induction tomorrow at 10:30 but the midwife did mention that if baby and I are ok then they may offer to let me go to 40+12. My parents flew over from abroad on my due date and are due to fly home on Thursday but are now talking about potentially changing their flights. Obviously that won't affect our decision too much.

I've read so many pros and cons and now just left stumped at what to do. Any advice would be really great. Thanks in advance x

I had a wonderful experience of an induction, just a pessary and this brought on labour within 2 hours, the had baby 3 hours later. I didnt need the drip so I could still be mobile and gave birth squatting on the bed. Lovely birth. Best of luck with yours. Flowers

It has to be your decision. But on the induction experience, I had two inductions at 40wks for medical reasons. Cervix was 'unfavourable' both times but it only took one lot of gel to get me started. I've no 'normal' labour to compare them to but both times felt fine, manageable and from first contractions to baby were 16hrs and 3hrs respectively. No epidural, syntocin drip with first and pethedine with an hour to go. No drugs second time round (although I was demanding them with 5 mins to go!) Induction is not always the horror story you tend to hear about. Best of luck with whatever you choose to do!

Morning all. Was praying to go into labour overnight, but apart from a few cramps waking me up all is calm. I'm a bit apprehensive but ready to listen to all my options. Thanks again for all your input x

Find an acupuncturist. ...

NaturWilde · 17/07/2017 12:01

I had a perfect induction at 40+16. Went straight to drip and it was a wonderful experience! No pain relief.

Try not to be scared, whatever the process! You can do this.

Frazzled2207 · 17/07/2017 12:59

Best of luck. Baby will be here in the next few days whatever happens x

Hi all. Just a little update. Arrived at the day assessment unit only to be told that they don't induce until 12 days overdue at the earliest now unless medically indicated. They weren't sure why the midwife had booked me in, but were happy to give us a little MOT.

Had the CTG which showed little man is doing fine and I'm having regular tightenings. Scan showed a normal amount of fluid and he is 2/5 engaged head down. I'm 1cm dilated.

Plan is that I've been booked in Wednesday morning for a potential induction, however if he's still moving well and I feel fine we can delay the induction process as long as we go in for a daily CTG.

Had a second sweep as well which was much more uncomfortable and seems to have shaken my system up a little which I guess is a good thing. In my head now I'm gong to try and give until 40+14 (Friday) for him to make his grand entrance by himself. That's my master plan anyway Smile

That all sounds very positive. Wishing you a safe delivery and enjoy meeting your son!

yellowgymball · 17/07/2017 17:57

I would wait it out personally.

For many women, induction results in spending several days in hospital gradually building up to the birth trying pessaries, drip, breaking of waters, sweeps etc... they then usually end up with a section if things don't progress after days of trying different things. Also, inductions are halted if delivery suites are full which means more waiting around.

I'm believe that if the body is simply not ready for labour, you should leave it and wait for things to happen naturally. Trying to force it for the sake of it will not be quick or pleasant in a lot of cases.

I would never opt for an induction if there was no real need to. I would rather be at home as long as possible and wait it out. If I went past 42 weeks or there was a problem such as an ineffective placenta or lack of foetal movements I would of course do whatever was necessary.

Slightly crappy admin but otherwise that all sounds good. Baby will be here very soon I think x

silkybear · 17/07/2017 22:00

Sounds encouraging, not long now!

FoxyinherRoxy · 17/07/2017 23:46

Lovely! Good luck x

willymcwill · 18/07/2017 16:36

That all sounds good. I hope things get going naturally for you!

Johno85 · 18/07/2017 16:41

40+11 and had a bit of a show so the sweep has obviously helped. Going to decline the induction option tomorrow and see how we're ticking along come Friday.

My induction took 6 hours from when they simultaneously broke my water and inserted the devils water iv to baby on my chest. So not long at all. I would only say that if I were to have one again (my second was a spontaneous labour, 4hrs, no epidural) I would tell them to put in the epidural at the same time as the pitocin. In my mind there's no point trying to go without it, it's not a natural labour and the pain is x100 right from the start, as opposed to natural labour which is gradual. I was levitating off the bed until the epidural was put in. But if I was as over due as you, I'd probably be getting the induction 😂 I'm not a very good late third trimester pregnant lady. Good luck xx

calimommy · 19/07/2017 04:14

Also I'm curious as to why your calling it 40+12 as opposed to 41+5? Is there a reason? Sorry I didn't read all the previous comments so you may have explained already.

Johno85 · 19/07/2017 04:25

Hey Cali. Cheers for the messsge. Probably only calling it 40+12 as it's 4:25am and I'm staring to brick it! Shock

I've noticed that some people use 40+7 and some use 41, I also wondered why the different ways of counting... maybe 40+ to make it clear exactly how many days "overdue".

Frazzled2207 · 19/07/2017 07:55

Policy at our hospital is they induce you at 40+12 not 41+5.

FoxyinherRoxy · 19/07/2017 09:15

Oh Johno it's not great is it? But it WILL be ok. My DD turned 10 last week, I was 14 days over and I remember the despair of waking up still pregnant. But, it was a fantastic birth.

Fingers crossed your little one makes their own way into the world soon Smile

Johno85 · 19/07/2017 11:32

Thanks foxy. Just having my ctg and all looking good. Plan is for a sweep and then give me and little man till Friday then review x
