Over weight and pregnant

I'm 6 +1 and had my initial midwife appointment last week where she said that due to my high bmi I would need a higher dose of folic acid and extra scans to monitor the baby's growth. Is anyone else in this situation?

I'm going to change to a healthier diet and she said I should aim to maintain my weight throughout my pregnancy rather than lose

I've tried researching this but can't find much about it?

I had extra scans and had to see a dietician etc I was actually 5lb lighter once given birth but didn't particularly try to diet. Eat healthier so the baby gets all the nutrients it needs and don't stuff your face (although every now and then is allowed!) extra scans just meant I saw baby more often which is lovely!

Yep same here.
Took the higher dose folic acid, had the extra scans, which was lucky cos DS was fucking massive on the large side. Had extra blood tests for gestational diabetes which were negative.
I ate sensibly and maintained my exercise levels as much as I could until the SPD stopped that. Put on 19lbs and a week after DS's birth I was 2lb lighter than pre pregnancy. It's a matter of being sensible. Which is really tricky when being ruled by hormones!

I am currently 20 weeks with first baby and am overweight.
I thought the midwife would tell me off but she was lovely and said first and foremost I was an expectant mother and that was the priority for me to focus on.
She did give me the increased dose of folic acid and also told me to take an aspirin (low dose) once a day to thin my blood to keep my blood pressure low (it wasn't high but apparently can cause problems for overweight women).
The biggest problem I've found so far is finding plus size maternity clothes!

I'm overweight and pregnant. Feel awful, and like my options have been taken away because I'm fat 😕

Marykate1987 · 15/07/2017 21:09

Thanks everyone I feel reassured now. My midwife was lovely about it. With regards to maternity clothes I'm wondering if I'll actually get a bump as I carry most of my weight around my stomach anyway so I'm hoping I won't need new clothes! What has everyone else found

I'm in the same boat. Only 5 weeks so early days for me, second baby and massively overweight. With my first I was slightly overweight when I was pregnant but put on loads of weight.

I don't have the option to do that this time due to my size. I've had very successful results following a low carb high fat way of eating but have read conflicting advice on whether this is safe to do when pregnant. Hoping to get some clarification from my midwife or doctor as low carb is the only eating plan where I don't binge uncontrollably or feel hungry.

Just scared I am going to put on so much weight, people will judge me and worst of all that I'll put my baby in danger Sad

If you're really worried, I can't recommend Slimming World enough - it's endorsed by the Royal College of Midwives and it's all about sensible, healthy eating...you need your midwife's permission to keep following it while pregnant, but I know plenty of women who have followed it and either lost or maintained sensibly while pregnant. I lost almost 6 stone with them before ttc - I'm at target but still following the basics during my pregnancy Smile
