Medication for sickness

So I'm 7.5 weeks, the sickness had really kicked in. I was really sick last pregnancy too, but never took any medication for it then, but thinking I should this time. Anything to try and help, especially with a toddler and a husband that works away.

I'm going to try and go to the docs on Monday, but just wondered if anyone could share what you're taking, and what the options might be, so I go in with some knowledge and don't get fobbed off by the doctor.

Thanks

This is all you need to know

Cyclizine is the most common, largely because it's cheap! It had minimal impact on me orally, but worked very well as an IV drip.

Ondansetron was best for me orally in my second pg.
metaclopromide worked best in my first.

Lots of info here

Cyclizine worked miracles for me. I wish I'd known it existed sooner, I ended up with it by chance as I mentioned during a doctors appointment that I had a lot of sickness.

Great link from Bike. The Pregnancy Sickness Support helpline is brilliant too, give them a call.

Your GP will likely start you on cyclizine first. It's an antihistamine which has been used safely in pregnancy for years.

If it doesn't help (brilliant for some women, useless for others. Did bugger all for me), don't wait too long before going back.

There's a variety of other drugs they might try you on, but ultimately a lot of women end up taking ondansetron. That was the only drug which helped me. Sadly some GPs are a bit twitchy about prescribing it. If you have that problem, call PSS for advice or come and have a chat on this thread. Loads of experience of sickness

Good luck!

Also useful if you think your GP is fobbing you off

Thanks everyone. Got cyclizine, just taken it, so here's hoping it works so I can cope a bit more! Really grateful for you taking the time to post and give me advice, all very helpful. x

So if I've taken cyclizine today but feel no better does that mean it's not going to work for me?

Probably. I find cyclizine is only ok if I take it when I have mild nausea with minimal vomiting. It also makes me comatose for hours!
Go back to GP. Ondansetron is the one you want but GPS are scared and very reluctant to prescribe it.

Lemondrop99 · 17/07/2017 22:20

If cyclizine hasn't worked within a few days, I'd go back. You do need to let it get into your system first. I personally found promthezine more effective.

How bad are your symptoms? Ondansetron is the good stuff but it is strong and can be hard to get, so you'd have to have to have quite bad sickness for the GP to prescribe it.

That said, if you were bad in your last pregnancy, there's a good chance you'll be bad this time and there's a strong argument for preventative medication. Tell your GP you want to treat aggressively now to prevent you deteriorating
