Low Lying Placenta

I recently had my 20 week scan for baby number 2 and we were told that the placenta is low lying almost covering the exit and baby was at the time head down using it almost as a pillow! We have to have another scan at 32 weeks. I would like to hear other peoples experiences of this, how did you feel when told? I am telling myself its common and as bump grows it should move round but I do have a niggling part of me that worries what if it doesn't do I really want a C-section? I have a 3 year old so obviously like most expectant mothers I only want a C-section if it was a last resort. Thanks

Both my DD's had this, by the end of the pregnancy the placenta had moved out of the way & had totally normal deliveries. So don't worry too much yet. Hope it goes the same way for you.

I mean, I had this with both DD's, that makes more sense!!

I had this with my second child and that was 31 years ago ! Back then it was graded depending on how covered it was over the cervix. I did end up in hospital for a few weeks because they were worried about sudden detachment and bleeding but it moved up as time went on and I went on to have a normal delivery.

I had it and did end up having a c section but mine was stage 4 and baby was transverse as well. They did scan quite a lot to check it hadn't moved and I think they were hoping she'd move so I could avoid c section. As for the c section it went really well, I healed well and quickly and it didn't interfere with anything to do with looking after dd or normal life. Apparently planned c sections heal easier than emergency ones.

Hi, i had it with ds, i had a couple of bleeds but it moved up by 35 weeks. he was born 38+1 weeks and is now 3.5 years old. My first bleed was at 21 weeks and it was a horrible feeling waiting to get past the 24 week mark. You just have to go with it, congratulations

Similar experience to Yellow Paisley. Low lying placenta with a couple of bleeds the first of which was at 21 weeks. I was hospitalised overnight for observation. Placenta moved up by 32 weeks so I was cleared for a natural delivery. I ended up with an emcs but that was for failure to progress, nothing to do with the placenta.

I'm in the same position and waiting for my second scan which they scheduled for 35 weeks for some reason. No bleeds so far and I really hope it will have been pulled up but if not I figure there's nothing I can do except prepare for the c-section

Hi OP, I had this same issue at my 20 week scan, the placenta was only 1cm away from the cervical opening. I had my 32 week scan 2 weeks ago and the placenta is now 10cm away and is no longer an issue. Good luck 😊

I had this with DC2 - was told it was unlikely to move up as it was completely covering the exit. They rescanned at 32 weeks and it had moved but not by enough - scanned again at 35 weeks and it was clear! Ended up with a section anyway for unrelated reasons.

To be honest I know quite a few people who had low lying placenta in pregnancy and all had moved in time, I think that's the most likely outcome.

I have this too, although mine was touching but not covering the cervix at 20 weeks. The leaflet I was give by the hospital says that 90% will move out of the way by late pregnancy. Even if you do have to have a cs, I had one last time and it was fine. It wasn't even planned - it was an emcs at fully dilated, and I had a very smooth recovery.
