So im currently in early stages of pregnancy and am thinking through what i may want/need... i like the idea of the chicco 'next to me' cribs as you can have the option of open or closed at night time and use it closed in the day.

just wondering if it is heavy to move around? and really what the general feedback was... iv heard they are better the Moses baskets but i suppose before spending the money i would rather get some more feedback... :)

Also any other 'must haves' you can recommend - im open to options

We got one with our first and will be using it again this time round. I absolutely LOVE it, but there are some pros and cons:

The good things are that it's really spacious and you can use it for months and months. DS was on the 91st centile and he was well over 6 months when we stopped using it, so it lasts far longer than a moses basket. Great for nighttime feeding as you can slide the baby in and out to feed, so if they've fallen asleep feeding it's easier to keep them asleep but still get them out of the bed! Great if you've had a section as there's no bending and lifting at night. You can use it as a travel cot if you go away whilst they're small. Easy to soothe baby back to sleep whilst not really waking up - you can hold their hand with the side down or stroke their hair but stay lying down in bed!

The downsides are you do have to move the legs too if you want to move it about, so collapse the whole thing. The sleeping bit is fabric so doesn't stay rigid without being on the frame. Is it a bit cumbersome but we did do it when ds was a bit older, moving it downstairs in the daytime. Saying that, for many months he slept in the carry cot of his pram when downstairs so it wasn't actually much of an issue.

PS Congratulations!!

I decided against this as I felt there was a risk that I might end up with covers/pillows in or too close to baby's crib. I also do y like that the design prevents you from easily putting the sides up etc. Also they are so expensive for what they are.

I'm sticking with Moses basket does pretty much the same thing but cheaper and safer in my eyes.

Unihorn · 13/07/2017 10:41

We used ours for just over 6 months and only stopped because she can pull herself up on it now so we've had to move her into their cot. I would definitely recommend it. My daughter hated her Moses basket after two weeks.

jeezlouise85 · 13/07/2017 10:45

I concur with the above comments, we loved ours. They're really light to move around and pack up flat if you need to use them as a travel cot.

The only downside we found is that because our bed has a solid base, the Chicco wouldn't fit 'next' to our bed as the feet are slightly wider than the crib. However this wasn't a problem until he became able to roll over and then we just zipped the side up.

kel1234 · 13/07/2017 10:52

Personally I'd never get one.
I know it's advised that they should sleep downstairs during the day, but my lb just slept upstairs in his crib and was absolutely fine, the blankets were tucked under tight, and I always had a video monitor on.
I hate Moses baskets as well so would never ever put my baby in one.

I have found the nexttome to be really safe, I've never had an issue with covers/pillows going into the crib and we have the side down every night. (I have a bedside table and then the nexttome so it isn't right up near the pillows) If you are worried about this you can have the side up and still see through it. I have my LO in a sleepyhead in it at the moment as it is big and spacious and this makes it a little more cosy. She is 10 weeks old.

She has a Moses basket too (for downstairs) and she is pretty much too big to sleep in it comfortably anymore. The nexttome still has loads of room for her to spread out and I think it will last until 6 months. I guess if you want to keep your LO in your bedroom until 6 months you need to consider what you will use after a Moses basket if their cot won't fit in your room.

I wouldn't say it is easy to move around (I wouldn't want to carry up and downstairs for example) but it can be done and it does fold down into a storage bag. It's certainly more sturdy than the Moses basket and a massive bonus I found was that you can tilt it. So if your LO has something like reflux or in our case she got a horrible cold at 2 weeks old, tilting it so her head was higher helped her to sleep better.

Hope this is useful info. I stayed away recently in a static caravan and didn't have room for the nexttome, LO slept in a Moses basket and I really missed the nexttome because it's so convenient.

daffo · 13/07/2017 11:04

I would definitely recommend:
Sleepyhead (LO self settles in it the second I put her in at night.)
Mamaroo - expensive but amazing for us (however I do think babies either love or hate them - apparently they do better if they have one from birth, not introduced after a few weeks.)
A vibrating bouncer chair - if LO has trapped wind or is uncomfortable she will usually be happy in this.
If you're breastfeeding mam bottles and mam dummies, she seems to have no issue switching between these and the breast.

Also I have personally found if she won't go to sleep I read Facebook out loud to her, works every time Smile

loved ours, my DD slept in hers until she was about 7 months, when we then side-carred the cot to the bed (she was crawling and I was worried she would launch herself over the edge).

They pose not greater risk than safe co-sleeping. I used to just sleep in thick PJ's and not have the duvet on me to reduce that risk. They aren't advisable if you or your partner smoke, but again it's just safe co-sleeping guidelines (check out the lullabye trust if interested). Great for when breastfeeding, and it fitted the sleepyhead in it perfectly

Choccyhobnob · 13/07/2017 12:13

Easy to move around the room as they have wheels but not so easy to move between floors as you can't just take the top part off he legs. We used the pram carrycot downstairs anyway.

Ours was essentially a giant bedside table as my baby would only sleep in my arms, on my chest or snuggled into my armpit so we never used the poxy thing but we've kept it as next time we might get a better sleeper and would maybe try a sleepyhead too.

My best buys:

  1. Cheap baby bouncer! Think we had a £15 bright starts one which he lived in.
  2. Angelcare bath support - fantastic
  3. Playmat like a fisher price jungle one.
  4. Carseat with isofix base and get the adaptors to make it fit on your pram. £30 for 2 bits of plastic seemed expensive but countless times we just moved carseat from car to pram without waking baby.
  5. And thinking ahead - Ikea Antilop highchair. £13 and fantastic. Don't waste money on a fancy one when this one wipes clean, goes in the dishwasher, is basically fabulous.
NerdyViking · 13/07/2017 12:36

These are all amazing advice, I'm due my first in nov and feeling a bit overwhelmed with the different options out there!

silkpyjamasallday · 13/07/2017 12:38

We had a snuzpod, which is better than the other bedside cots as you can take the cot bit off the legs to move it around easily, both sections allow the cot to be rocked too. We only used it for a little while and then just started cosleeping, but you can sell them on for only a little less than the new price. Ours is going to a friend who is due in December. I liked that even with the side zipped up I could see dd as it is mesh. She still fits into it at 10 months but she can crawl, cruise and climb now so it isn't safe.

LJFM2B · 13/07/2017 13:19

@NerdyViking there is so much to choose from, its to have choices but when its for something so tiny and important you want to get it right ... and in some cases paying alot is worth it and in some its not at all worth it so mumsnet is becoming my favourite thing ever!

im going to the baby show in october so want to have a good idea of what i want to get before then so that i can hopefully grab some deals while im there.

Thanks to all ladies who have commented with advice its great!

I'm another one with a baby that prefers just to sleep on or next to me rather than in the Chicco, but it is handy as I can do quick nappy changes in it without having to get out of bed (lazy I know!). I bought ours second hand and bought a new mattress so I'm not too worried about its lack of use.
