Bad headaches - Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopeitwontbebig · 24/03/2007 16:27

I've been getting the occasional headaches. But past couple of days they have been pretty unbearable. Before pregnancy I was prone to synus pain headaches which I used to take Beechams Flu Plus, seemed the decongestant ingrediant worked really well. However, have heard that it isn't safe in pregnancy.

HELP!!!!!!!! Does anyone have a suggestions. Feeling like rubbish right now

I was in the same boat when I was pregnant with dd2, unfortunately, you can't take anything until you are past 16 weeks. All i can think of to recommend is a cold flannel on your head and drink lots of water.

Hope you get better soon.

Eaglebird · 24/03/2007 16:38

Paracetamol is safe to use in pregnancy for pain relief.
I'd second the suggestion to drink plenty of water. I find I get migraines when I'm dehydrated.
For the sinus pain, try half-filling a bowl with boiling water, and putting your face over it, with a towel over your head to trap the steam, and breathe in the steamy air for up to a minute.
If you have recurring snus pain, maybe you have a sinus infection, which may need antibiotics from your doc.
Hope you feel better soon.

you can take paracetomol 500mg i had horrific headaches with both my pregnancys and the midwife told me to take them right from the start you dont have to suffer!!

Radley · 24/03/2007 16:44

Blimey, show's how things have changed, my midwife told me in no uncertain terms that I couldn't take anything until i was 16 weeks.

Chandra · 24/03/2007 16:47

I suffered from migraines and while I was pregnant I was prescribed something that I believe was called Co codamol, or something of the sort. I thought it was the same as paracetamos with codeine but it wasn't quite the same. Could you ring your midwife?

Hopeitwontbebig · 24/03/2007 16:48

I'm afraid I'm one of those pregos who is afraid to drink any alcohol or anything, let alone take drugs. So am trying to be uber cautious.

Pre pregnant I found that paracetamol alone didn't touch these sort of headaches. Think I will try the steam method.

Thanks for quick responses so far...

I have something that works, but it will make you smell.

I had awful headaches during my pregnancy with Dd1 and my mum suggested vinegar. Soak a rag in it, squeeze it out so that it's quite damp and then lie the rag across your forhead and go lie down. I was very sceptical but it did work.

Pixiefish · 24/03/2007 17:12

I find that if I don't drink wnoufgh water i get a real banging headache now that I'm pg. Are you drtinking enough

Hopeitwontbebig · 24/03/2007 18:29

Thanks for the tips. Pixie, probably not been drinking enough. Just poured myself my 3rd glass of squash in quick succession though, so hopefully that'll help. Will maybe try the vinegar tip!

Drink just water, squash has so much sugar that may make the problem worse.

When I can't have more painkillers, I do soak a towel in freezing cold water and cover the area that hurts the most with it. It does help.

EdieMcredie · 25/03/2007 11:34

Someone on here suggested to me that stuff you put on your forehead, strips or comes in a roll on. Apparently very good, im going to get some.

1sttimeM2B · 25/03/2007 11:53

I have only just found out that I am expecting, but have been suffering with headaches for a few weeks now, and I never used to suffer from them, unless I had a stinking hangover.

I have bought forehead, it comes in a fat lipsaves esq packaging, you apply it to your forehead and the menthol ingredients make you skin tingle and relieves the pain... I would highly recommend it! You can get it from most chemists.

humpydumpy · 25/03/2007 12:10

I found the soluble Paracetamol got to the pain very quickly. I also kept an ice pack in the freezer, which was great.

I also think that the flap of skin between your thumb and pointy finger is a pressure point that is meant to help with headaches. You need to pinch it. Not too sure on that though.

marieg76 · 26/03/2007 15:46

I was suffering from terrible headaches recently (was 10 weeks - now 12) and asked the pharmacist about 4head. He said that he wouldn't recommend it during pregnancy. I imagine he was covering his own backside but it might be worth checking.

I found that collapsing into bed for the day (am pg with first child and have a sympathetic boss so had that luxury) and trying to sleep really helped. I also drank masses of water and avoided TV, computers etc.

LieselVentouse · 26/03/2007 16:37

How PG are you?

Does anyone get migraines?
I used to get them before I was pg, and still get them now I'm pg (9+5) but a bit more frequently, every 4 or 5 days or so.
However the ones I've had since being pg don't involve a headache (which is great). I just get the usual flashing lights effect, and they completely disappear & I'm back to normal in about 10 - 15 mins (which is also great)
Today I had the usual flashing light effect, but I also had a very brief episode of blurry vision (where I had to close 1 eye to be able to concentrate on my PC screen). This blurriness only lasted about 10-15 seconds, then went, then the flashing lights went too after a few minutes, and I was back to normal again, as usual, after 10 minutes.
Is this normal??
I was a bit freaked out by the bluriness, as I can't remember that happening before.
I've got my booking appointment on Wednesday, so I think I'll mention it to the midwife then. I had my blood pressure taken 2 weeks ago, and it was absolutely fine then. I hope it hasn't rocketed up since then. I feel well in myself, apart from the usual tiredness & ms.
Has anyone experienced this before? Should I be worried?

Mrsjaffabiffa · 26/03/2007 19:38

Don't suffer, paracetamol is safe for you and baby in pregnancy. I know you said it didn't work before you were pregnant but it may be worth a try if things are really bad and nothing else works, it will not harm your baby, you need to be feeling your best throughout pregnancy. If you speak to your gp or midwife I'm sure they would advise you to take it.

I hope you find something that works, headaches are just the pits. for you.

anneme · 27/03/2007 02:32

I got migraines until about 24 weeks - used to wake up in the middle of the night feeling grim. Paracetamol does help (although not all the time) also drinking lots. Also I have a relaxation cd (one of those hypno things) and that helped sometimes - think it was sometimes stress related - had 3 mc before this one so was a bit twitchy. Now 32 wks and no headaches for ages fwiw

Hopeitwontbebig · 27/03/2007 09:17

Thanks for your messages of support. These headaches are really rubbish. It came back again last night, this time radiating from the back of my neck, so maybe it is stress related. Will try all tips, thank you

If it's stress-related I find relaxing in the bath, or guilting DP into a massage, sometimes works. I am relying on paracetamol too though.

anneme · 27/03/2007 17:48

If it is the neck you could try the osteopath - I have been for my back and it has been v helpful
