We had our son during October last year and I agree, it's very overwhelming to decide what they need to stay warm enough!

It sounds like you've got most things wusses. Plenty of vests both long and short sleeved and I found that the sleep suits with the scratch mits on were handy too! Lots of hats too as they lose heat through their heads.

With regards to outerwear we bought a couple of the snowsuits! They're super thick but we used them every time we took our son out over the top of a vest and sleepsuit! To sleep, we put him in a long sleeved vest, sleepsuit and a 2.5 tog sleepbag.

It's very overwhelming at first but you'll get to grips with it quite quickly! I was advised to check my son's temperature by touching his chest rather than his head and we did that all the time to check if he was too hot! They will let you know if they're too hot or too cold chick.

Also, not sure if you already have but it might be an idea to invest in just a few tiny baby bits. I was going to but ended up going to term. Ended up with a 6lb4 baby who's newborn buried him and who we had to take out at 1 day old to buy clothes that fit!

Good luck! Flowers

I have an end of November baby. I loved the next upto 1m sleepsuits, which lasted till he was probably 6/8 weeks. And then the 0-3. Plain White vests in 0-1 and 0-3. Couple of cardigans. Definetly the popper up the front sleepsuits as the side popper ones/over the head ones were too tricky when he was tiny.

I got 10-15 vests and it was definitely more than enough. Don't get long sleeved vests, babies are hard enough to dress without trying to put a long sleeved vest under a babygrow! My personal favourite are sleeveless vests. 7-10 babygrows is more than enough.

A grosnug.

Tuppence & crumble starsnug. Absolutely brilliant. So much easier than pramsuits. I'll be buying the bigger size one come winter. No trying to post tiny baby arms/legs into a pramsuit, and then you can layer up with blankets if needed.

And blankets, I have four or so good velour blankets. Mainly from TK MAXX. Brilliant. Still used. Hats yes, but mittens fall off!

Clothing wise, I loved the h&m footsy leggings. I'm a fan of tesco for baby clothes too. It all seems to wash well. Frugi is all so lovely, expensive but worthwhile.

Most important purchase. ..6 foot charger lead! From amazon. Babies fall asleep on you and ALWAYS when you're on 4% battery and 6 inches to far away for the charger to fit!

My son was born October 15th last year -

I wouldn't bother with short sleeve bodysuits.
I'd go for

•vest type bodysuits to wear under an outfit to keep baby warm
•long sleeve sleepsuits
•long sleeve bodysuits
•trousers
•dungarees
•cardigans
•a couple of thicker jackets or pram suit
•the obvious hats mits/scratch mits and socks
•blankets

Just remember that babies feel the cold quickly. Short sleeve bodysuits just don't seem worth it as I think under an outfit would be too much whereas a vest type one is perfect

In response to @beccii161016 I was 10 days late induced and had an 8lbs 9oz baby and newborn petite from mamas and papas were "snug" at best 😂🙈. But great advice Smile

Do you mean short sleeved vests with poppers between legs and long sleeved sleepsuits with footed legs?
If so I think you have most of what you'll need initially.
We got given a couple of fleecy sleepsuits which were handy for over indoor clothes in the car/in shops etc (bulky snow suits aren't recommended in the car but if your planning walks from home could be useful in 0-3.) Our dd kicked off blankets from being tiny.
Second whoever said sleepsuits with poppers up the front - side and over the head ones are much trickier to do up!

I've had an October baby and a December baby.

For the first months vest (either long or short sleeve), babygrow and maybe cardigan if it's really cold whilst inside.

For venturing out, obviously it depends on the temperature but snow suits are great (I'd get a cute fluffy one for cold, crisp days and a water-resistant one for wet and windy days).

Hats are a minefield. Definitely get a selection for going outside, but when I was on the ward after delivery both times (2014 and 2016) I was told off by midwives for putting a hat on them, so took it off, then the next midwife would come and ask why my baby wasn't wearing a hat. Just ignore and use your own judgement!

Get a few blankets with different thicknesses/textures. Breathable fabrics are essential for sleep blankets (i.e. cot/Moses basket) for safety, but you can still buy the fleecy ones for lying on/cuddling up in the day/in the pram.

And congratulations! Newborn snuggles on cold winter days are the absolute best.

Definitely get the tuppence and crumble star blanket! Dd2 was born mid November and we used it all winter. It was a godsend. You can't strap babies in to car seats when they're in bulky snowsuits because it isn't safe so the star blanket is perfect.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 11/07/2017 18:06

Watching! Due DS2 start of Nov, DS1 is a May baby so opposite seasons!

So far I've got zip babygrows from Gap, and a ton of xmas stuff Grin Some fluffy trousers from Next, so fun. Got lots of hats and woollen cardis from DS, love them.

Going to get:
Morrck baby wrap for car seat
Snowsuit - not sure it ever really gets cold enough for that?? Might just do layers.
That's it really! Watching with interest.

Apparently air humidifiers are handy! Not sure what the effect is though!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 11/07/2017 18:07

Ah yes, and a T&C star blanket!! I was thinking about those this morning - I have wanted one since BEFORE I had kids Grin

firsttimemum889 · 11/07/2017 19:25

Great thread! My DC1 due October too so am also thinking about this. Have got a few sleepsuits and vests so far, need to get cardigans, hats, mits. Exciting! Enjoy your October baby!

neversleepagain · 13/07/2017 20:46

I had twins at the end of September. For each baby I had...

10 sleepsuits
10 short sleeved vests
4 cardigans
1 fleece jacket
1 snowsuit (great for those freezing days when I still wanted to go for walks)
4 hats
3 blankets
2 sleeping bags

Naschkatze · 13/07/2017 20:57

Tip for layers - lots of baby cardigans/jumpers seem to come with hoods and cute ears which are sweet, but a pain in the car seat if it's too warm for them to have the hood up in the car. The hood pushes their head forwards and doesn't look very comfy/safe. So definitely look for some without hoods!

We bought a pram/snowsuit for our Feb baby (also in the SE) and I think he wore it twice! I'd go for layers and blankets now I think. Although they are very cute so I don't blame you if you buy one.

You will also probably be given more baby clothes than you can imagine so don't go over board with your pre-baby shopping!
