A weird question about early pregnancy

OK, my wife(who's about seven weeks pregnant) has just said she thinks the dog is coming over to her when's she's feeling sick/generally ropey, more than usual. I'd love this to be true, but any experience of dogs reacting, or not, to pregnancy would be interesting and appreciated. Smile

they definately know Grin

I think my dog has been a bit clingier to me. It is likely that there are changes in pheromones that the dog can pick up on.

SecretFreebirther · 09/07/2017 20:20

Absolutely they know!

AshesEmbersFlames · 09/07/2017 20:24

I think my dog knew. Even from very early on he got very protective. When I opened the door to someone he didn't know (e.g. Yodel man) he would insinuate himself between me and the stranger. He didn't do it before I was pg or after the baby was born. Was weird but nice.

Backhometothenorth · 09/07/2017 20:24

Yes my lovely dog followed me around the house as chaperone for both my pregnancies, as soon as I stood up to move anywhere she was there to escort me bless her

smileygrapefruit · 09/07/2017 20:28

They definitely know. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell. They can detect changes in hormones and pheromones and have been known to alert epileptic owners before they have a seizure etc. There are dogs being trained to detect cancer. They are amazing.

I had a lovely wee Yorkshire terrier named Max who totally knew I was pregnant with DS1 even before I had a bum.

He went from hopping all over me to always jumping gracefully over my middle almost over night.

Dogs are the best people.

Weebo · 09/07/2017 20:30

Oh no.

I meant bump.

I've always had a bum.

They definitely know! Ddog gets very protective of me and likes curling up on my tummy more than usual both times I've been pregnant.

mummabubs · 09/07/2017 20:50

They definitely know! They can detect the pregnancy hormone and your wife will start to smell different to your dog. 😊

Having said that dogs can also be very emotionally intelligent- my goldie used to come and lie with me whenever I was feeling sad and I wasn't pregnant!

InThisTogether · 10/07/2017 09:54

Yes, my cat (who has never caught/ brought me any little creatures in the whole time we've had him) has been bringing me 3 or 4 mice/ birds/rabbits a day from the moment i found out i was pregnant.

I read that he's trying to keep me well fed so my ' kitten' will be healthy. Quite sweet really (except for a house full if desd rodents).

Lemondrop99 · 10/07/2017 10:33

My dog literally doesn't have a clue. In fact when I took to my bed for eels through severe sickness, he basically ignored me!!! Now I'm mobile again, I am positive that he doesn't have the foggiest what's going on. For such an intelligent dog, he can be very dim sometimes. He's also very self absorbed Grin

Lemondrop99 · 10/07/2017 10:33

*weeks not eels

They know! I had three home births and my beloved spaniel just seemed to understand...she stayed with me throughout and was the most calming, reassuring presence. Sadly she passed away last year, but I now have her great, great, great nephew (next best thing!). I also have an elderly dog with a brain tumour and my pup smells his head frequently...I am certain he can tell the disease is there...

Thanks for all the replies. It's good to know we're not necessarily projecting our feelings onto her behaviour. Though very pleased not having to deal with the mouse body count that inthistogther had to deal with Smile the only annoying thing our greyhound is doing is steeling ball of wool whilst I'm practicing knitting, but she's so happy for those three seconds she has it Wink

Don't have a dog but my cats have been obsessed with my arm pits. Sniffing, licking and then rolling around like they've been on the cat nip

mummabubs · 10/07/2017 17:47

Haha this is our greyhound's new favourite hobby too!! 😂😂

My cats definitely know! Sit by or on me a lot more, especially when I'm not feeling great!

Intransige · 10/07/2017 23:06

Our dog didn't know, but he's not the brightest Grin

user1498647726 · 11/07/2017 11:26

That's superb 😀 we've only had ours six months.,but she's coming out of herself beautifully.I think she'll be a great family dog, though can imagine her being (or seeming to be) bemused. As she loves squeaky toys, we put down a large soft rabbit door stop by the french windows at the weekend, as I thought I'd start letting her know not all toy-looking things are hers (grin)

Let me know how that goes @user1498647726, I'm attempting the same! Ours has learnt after 3.5 years that his toys and his furry spaniel cousin's toys are separate... but then if another dog has a ball on a walk he sometimes forgets this rule! 🙈 They are such gentle giants aren't they, I'm confident ours will be a brilliant big brother!

Confuseddot · 11/07/2017 23:12

I found out I was pregnant due to my dog. He wouldn't leave me or my boobs alone so I did a test as online said cancer of pregnant. Voila. 20 weeks now
