What's the thing about c sections and gas/trapped wind?!

I'm due to have a planned csection in a few weeks and I'm sure I read previously about others saying the gas was the worst bit?

Tell me more! What to expect? Do they pump you fill or air then or is it from being lay down?? What I can do to help? There was summit about Peppermint oil capsules - good/bad?

Thanks!

No experience of the wind, but I did read peppermint tea reduces or possibly stops milk so if you are planning to breast feed maybe check out if this is true on eg la Leche league or Kelly mom websites before taking anything. Good luck Smile

I've had 4 sections and had it every time, each time worse than before. I also only got it once at home and I was in hospital for 5/7 days each time.

Peppermint yes worked a treat.

Erm, I also was a very efficient pooer Blush don't really know how to describe it but I never needed to strain or even try!

Hollyhop17 · 09/07/2017 20:15

Oh thank god this is normal. Had my section on Thursday and my tummy has been churning ever since... So uncomfortable! Passing wind is not coming easily but my god, the churning is grim.

Lie on your back and pull your legs up so that your feet are under your knees. Push up to raise your pelvis off the bed so that your body forms a triangle with the bed. Helps the gas move through the gut and get released.

I had a C-section and no one told me anything about this. I don't remember having it at all so presumably I didn't!

I did have months and months of a really weird, uncomfortable feeling every time I needed a poo afterwards though. I can only presume it was things pressing on internal scar tissue or something?! It felt really sensitive and like I couldn't keep still while it was happening. Very odd! Not painful though.

Different scenario but I had a laparoscopy some years back because I had a tangerine sized cyst on my ovary and they pumped your abdominal cavity with gas... problem is that some residual gas can stay trapped and it can cause intense pain in your shoulders and chest - I got rushed back into hospital because they wanted to be sure I didn't have a clot because I am thrombophilic.. it was pretty excruciating, but I think I was pretty unlucky. It does pass, but just be aware - maybe talk to your healthcare provider/MW about pain relief. Fingers crossed for you. X

megletthesecond · 09/07/2017 20:51

It didn't happen with either my emcs or ELCS. Which is odd because I've had IBS for years and always suffer from stomach problems, but never when I was pregnant.

64PooLane · 09/07/2017 20:52

I had it in my shoulder too, like a previous poster. Agony. Glad to see someone else mention that! In hospital I was told it was really common, but in RL nobody else I mentioned it to had ever heard of it.

Topsyloulou · 09/07/2017 22:05

Another one with pain in the shoulder. The pain was worse than the csection. I was given peppermint tablets on the drug rounds, everyone who had a csection was taking them so think we were all suffering. I then had peppermint tea & ate peppermints at home. After a few days it was all back to normal. Will be going prepared with peppermint cordial in my bag this time!

Thurlow · 09/07/2017 22:10

I had never heard of it and I thought I was having heart problems, what with it being in my left arm Blush

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 09/07/2017 22:11

EMCS and ELCS, no wind problems with either.

HariboFrenzy · 09/07/2017 22:12

I was worried about this before I had ds, 2 years ago. On here someone recommended colpermin tablets so I took some into hospital and had a couple once I was back on the ward. I don't know if I was just lucky or if it was down to the tablets but I'll be taking some next time too!

Imstickingwiththisone · 09/07/2017 22:18

Aye it's not nice and e pain in shoulder was called referral pain by dr on the round. Possibly the excess gas puts pressure on nerves? Midwives gave me peppermint oil capsules once i mentioned it and i let rip overnight!

NuzzleandScratch · 09/07/2017 22:27

I had this. One of my midwives told me the pain in the right shoulder is due to the trapped wind in the abdomen pushing up into the liver, which presses on nerves in the shoulder. The same doesn't happen on the left, because the stomach is on the left, which is soft, whereas the liver is harder. It passed quite quickly anyway, but was quite painful at the time!

AceholeRimmer · 09/07/2017 22:30

Trapped wind was the biggest cause of my pain believe it or not, the wound was secondary! The midwives didn't give anything for wind Confusedbut once I got home I took some peppermint oil capsules that night, farted all night and felt like a new person the next morningGrin It was literally half my recovery done there and then!

Ellapaella · 09/07/2017 22:30

Yes I had shoulder tip pain after my second elective section. It was bloody agony! They had to rule out a blood clot on the lung because I couldn't breathe in without it really hurting. Wore off after about 24 hours though. Didn't have it with my first section.

bluechameleon · 09/07/2017 22:36

I was given peppermint water in the hospital which helped a lot. But the bottle said it would reduce milk production, and I had issues with supply. I don't know if they were connected (I had lots of other breastfeeding problems too) but it is one of the things I am anxious about this time around.

wibblywobblyfish · 09/07/2017 22:41

I was on the high dependency postnatal ward after my first section. I let out the most enormous loud fart completely by accident. I was really shocked and embarrassed and I blamed it on newborn ds.

newbian · 10/07/2017 02:25

Any other remedy besides peppermint? I remember when I was BF DD that peppermint is reported to decrease milk supply so I would need to avoid it. Had terrible wind after ELCS and good chance of another this time.

Dibbles1967 · 10/07/2017 03:01

Yep. Windeze (sp) I had it in both shoulders with the first one and it was awful.

You may not get it but be prepared!

ShowOfHands · 10/07/2017 03:36

I had it in my right shoulder too. It was agony.

They just limited the peppermint capsules to 4 hourly as I was breastfeeding. Milk supply was fine.
