Will they tell me at my 12wk scan all is ok, or will I have to wait a few days?

Just as the title really!

12 wk scan next Friday, will be 12+2.

Would love to tell step kids that evening when they come over [assuming all is well] but will we actually know then or will we have to wait a few days for a letter, I believe there is a blood test involved as well as a scan?

TIA

They will talk you through it during the scan and you can have a scan picture to show the step kids. You usually have to pay for this so take some money or your card.

I had bloods taken at the 12 week scan too,you do have to wait for a letter for the results from this.

Hope all goes well for you, exciting times!

For the downs test results you'll have to wait. They call you within 3 working days if you're high risk and you'll get a letter in the post if you're low risk. We told people after 3 working days when I hadn't had the call. Letter arrived 2 days later.

It also depends on your hospital. At my hospital we could wait for the blood test results (45 mins) but it's a research hospital with a very advanced fetal medicine unit (in London).

MsPassepartout · 08/07/2017 08:27

We had to wait for the results of the Downs testing too.
As with a pp, we were told that you get a call within a few days if the results come back as high risk, and the results in the post if you're low risk.

We didnt have the downs screening so told people right after the scan.

Ah thanks everyone - are they able to give you an indication re downs from the scan? I think I read there are physical signs as well as the ones they test for in your blood?

To be honest, this has been through donor ivf and the donor is in her twenties so I believe the risk is a lot less than if they used my 40 yr old eggs (if I'd had any left that is)

I've been on edge the whole of this trimester, after 6 years and a lot of heartache I'm still not convinced I haven't actually made it all up (despite being lucky enough to see the little bean at 7 weeks) (and being sick as a dog and dead tired for the last 9 weeks)

Hi OP did you specifically ask for antenatal screening? Because if so they will give you a likelyhood or "risk" of having trisomies (Downs, Edwards, Patau Syndrome) and they work out that risk by checking the scan (Nuchal Translucency, the build up of fluid behind the baby's neck) your age (or egg donor age) do you smoke, do you have diabetes and also the combined bloods.

The bloods are testing your Free Beta HCG and your PAPP-A levels.

All this information combined will give you a risk factor.

The background risk (for example, the risk factor for everyone before the screening) is 1:1200 for Downs and I think even less for Edwards and Patau.

With my combined screening I came back as a 1 in 87 chance of Down Syndrome.

If you get a result like this they will ask you if you want further tests. The test that the NHS offer is called an Amnio which is invasive and has a 1% risk of miscarriage. Because of this me and OH opted for private screening which cost £300 and it's a blood test. That test was 99.7% accurate.

We had to wait a whole week after the scan to find out the results and thankfully we came back all clear and the baby was fine. And the perk of the test (because they are looking at the baby's DNA) they could tell us the sex at 13 weeks Smile we are having a little boy!

I would advise anyone to think seriously about whether they want the screening because I literally worried myself sick for a whole week and sank into depression waiting for those results.

If you come back as low risk however and the scan looks fine then I'd say your good to go and spread the good news!

My high all came purely on bloods by the way, my HCG was four times what It should have been! I'm 26 so age wasn't a factor. They still didn't explain my dodgy bloods. It's a forever mystery. Good luck x

You can find out your NT measurement at the scan and if that's nice and low there's a good chance you'll be ok, although not guaranteed of course. The other indication is if there's a visible nasal bone, it's often absent in babies with downs syndrome at the 12 week scan.

The midwife recommended the screening, I guess because of my age, although as the egg age is young hopefully that will make it low risk - no smoker & no diabetes so fx!

Glad it was good news for you jessy and thanks for all the detail everyone Smile really helpful

🤞For next Friday then!
