HG sickness AFTER giving birth?

DFriend had her baby 3 days ago, baby was full term but just in NICU for a while due to some other complications but nothing serious Flowers

She is still being sick and feeling nauseous! She did enquire about it to one of the midwives, who just said it can be normal.

I think she should seek further advice, don't you?

I'm petrified that this isn't a pregnancy thing for her and she has something awful she doesn't know about going on Sad

I'm 21 weeks with horrendous HG and this really scares me... I thought it'd at least all be gone after giving birth!

Has anyone been through anything similar before?

The poor love was crying and saying she doesn't see how she can cope any longer with it.

I had nausea/sickness afterwards and was told it was normal as you're still very hormonal.

PayingMyWayYouSay · 07/07/2017 12:46

Dame Did you have HG? When did it end, how long after birth?

I had HG with DS1 and was hospitalised twice and threw up through labour and for about a week afterwards so can be normal I think

53rdWay · 07/07/2017 12:58

It can be normal. Mine lasted 24 hours after birth - I've heard of other people who had weeks of it.

Lemondrop99 · 07/07/2017 13:13

It can happen but it's pretty rare

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/07/2017 14:15

OP, I didn't have HG, just awful, awful sickness throughout the whole pregnancy.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/07/2017 14:17

Lemon not according to the midwives I spoke to and Google. Why do you say it's rare?

GooodMythicalMorning · 07/07/2017 14:17

My tummy didn't settle for a week or so with both and both times I had Hg.

PayingMyWayYouSay · 07/07/2017 14:28

Dame Sorry if I came across as rude, but that is HG, isn't it?

There's no actual test for HG, it's just really vile sickness throughout the pregnancy

Your weren't rudeSad

Maybe it was then,it was 16 years ago and no one really mentioned HG back then. It was bad enough to be off work so I suppose it could've been.

53rdWay · 07/07/2017 14:32

Yes Paying although sometimes it feels like every medical professional you speak to has a different definition of what HG is. I had a consultant say HG, a GP say not HG, and midwives say everything from HG to "just normal sickness".

** that sad face was meant to be Smile btw!

Dame, there's a HG support thread on here and the lady running it has been overseeing it a long time. We discussed this recently and she said there's only about 2 women she can recall suffering after birth. One lady did continue to feel sick until she stopped breast feeding. The majority of women feel almost immediate relief, or at least within 24 hours. Ok, this is just anecdotal evidence but it seems pretty representative. All the women who haven't given birth on that thread since I've been on it have felt much better starlight after birth.

Also various resources, like the Pregnancy Sickness Support website say the same

"I still have pregnancy sickness in my third trimester, will it go away when I give birth?

The good news is that for the vast majority of sufferers the physical symptoms of HG disappear completely as soon as the baby is born. You should be aware though that it is not unknown for the nausea to persist after birth especially if you have been severely ill."

I have a couple of friends who had HG and they all felt better afterwards too.

I don't have any scientific evidence to back it up, just pretty much everything I've heard says that the snoring of HG sufferers feel better after birthing the placenta or at least within a few days.

At least, it's that hope that keeping me going through an awful pregnancy!!!! Grin

Wow, sorry for all the typos!

BlueAndYou · 07/07/2017 16:36

Jesus, why would you continue to BF knowing it may contribute to the sickness?

I know I couldn't do it Sad

Lemondrop99 · 07/07/2017 16:57

I know. Brave lady. Don't think I could do it either
