Have you tried Rennie tablets? I love those things, they did me wonders during my pregnancy. The other thing might be worth a try is sucking on some mints or sipping cold water.

if all else fails, see if you can get some Milk of Magnesia.

Emprexia · 22/03/2007 23:24

Oh, another tip i just remembered.. Bananas!! They're a natural antacid.

BallsOfChocolate · 22/03/2007 23:25

No, you need liquid Gaviscon. Also, sip cool water and stay upright for a bit.

I had terrible heartburn with my ds, started at 5 months and I had it every day till the day he was born. I lived off the Rennie fruit tablets, must have got through a large box a week. This time I have stocked up on the remegel, chewy tablets which I find are working well. I found that nothing else worked, even eating really plain food gave me heartburn.

I feel for you, I know how horrible it is.

I know milk is often suggested as a solution but liquids actually reflux more easily than solids so it's better not too drink lots and don't have anything to drink in the cople of hours before you go to bed.

I had horrific heartburn in my first pg but managed to control it in my 2nd & 3rd by working out which foods triggered it. Orange juice and fresh bread were the biggest culprits but pasta, chocolate, creamy sauces and butter used to set it off occasionally. Keeping a food diary when I had a bad bout helped.

I used to take Rennies Fruit tablets but was prescribed Ranitidine by the gp which reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces and that really helped. You can buy Zantac from the pharmacy which is the same but obviously it's free on prescription!

McCadburysDreamyegg · 23/03/2007 20:42

I used tums and rapeeze (fruity) constantly throughout both of my pregnancies.

PurpleLostPrincess · 23/03/2007 20:44

I was just talking about this on another thread - my GP used to prescribe me with massive bottles of gaviscon when I was having DD - do they still do this? I'm thinking of asking for some as I'm finding it hard to cope with inbetween the sickness.

divamumplusbump · 23/03/2007 20:55

i had boiled rice for lunc and dinner, seems ok. i cant see myself leaving on them till give birth
i think kepeing food diary is good, hopefully it goes, not to stay
anyway feel better, but one last q`s does gavisone give you runs? [tmi]

Just for the record, I have literally just got back from my first visit to my osteopath and did a clicky thing along my spine which he thinks will help heartburn. Apparently the part of the spine that protects the heart is very stiff because it's got a very important organ to protect. Also bad posture from being sat at a desk can make it worse. Not sure how it'll go as only just been but feel much better for going.

derlor · 23/03/2007 21:53

Loveheart sweeties also have "acid regulators" in them - worked a treat for me during pg no2. oh, and you don't need a prescription!!

BallsOfChocolate · 24/03/2007 01:14

Gaviscon should not give you the runs. Actually I'd mention it at your next ante-natal check or talk to your pharmacist - there are lots of leaflets on managing reflux and dyspepsia. In the meantime, I know it sounds obvious, but eat little and often, rather than normal sized meals.

sandcastles · 24/03/2007 02:00

I used milk for mine, still get it now & it still works.

Bananas are supposed to help too, but I never tried this, as can't stand them.
