Hayfever in pregnancy

I seemed to have developed hayfever in this pregnancy, and thank my lucky stars that I don't suffer with this every year. Flowers to those who have it as a summerly affliction.

What are your best remedies for hayfever in pregnancy? My face is on fire, nose/eyes/throat all suffering quite badly.

Local honey is meant to be a good natural remedy, I know a lot of people who swear by it.

I'll be trying it for myself next week!

A lot of antihistamines are safe to take in pregnancy. You just need to check with GP / pharmacist

Eminado · 02/07/2017 20:35

My GP gave me Beconase nasal spray after seeing the sight of me

  • ask your GP what you can take?

Thank you, will give the honey a try.

I spoke to a pharmacist, and she told me that all I could really use was a saline spray for my nose. Will go to my GP and see what they recommend antihistamine wise. Thanks.

Pharmacist is covering themselves as pretty much all drugs need to be prescribed in pregnancy

Moanyoldcow · 03/07/2017 00:45

I used cetirizine throughout my last pregnancy and am using it this time too.

My doctor said it was fine and it all that worked for me.

I've been taking loratidine my entire pregnancy, GP and midwife said it's perfectly safe.

Also smother my nose in haymax when going outside. It helps a little.

Mandraki · 03/07/2017 07:29

I have taken loratadine a couple of times through my pregnancy when it's been really bad, cetrizine (sp) is often ok too. Failing that I find a really hot cup of tea (decaf..) gives temporary relief as it feels like it washes away some of the ick and scratchyness. Hay fever is awful at the best of times though, never mind when you are trying not to take anything for it!

Local honey! Apparently nettle tea made from your own nettles is meant to help as well. You can also buy pollen from Neil's Yard and (so the theory goes) that can help to prevent symptoms.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 03/07/2017 07:39

It sounds like a lot of faff but changing your clothes/showering when you get in in the evening really helps. You literally wash the pollen away. Also vaseline around your nose when you go outside helps.

Ilovewillow · 03/07/2017 07:53

I suffered in both pregnancies so I can empathise! Haymax is great, local honey, nelsons homeopathic remedy are all good! Diet helps too - try to limit dairy products and caffeine.

YellowLawn · 03/07/2017 07:56

loratadine and cetirizine are usually fine.
as are steroid nasal sprays (beconase for example)
speak to the gp if you need confirmation.

YellowLawn · 03/07/2017 07:57

and absolutely yes to all pollen prevention measures.
