Period length before pregnancy

Hello, apologies if this is posted in the wrong place (I've tried conception but had no response and thought that this might be a better section to ask in). I just wanted some reassurance/success stories(!). Smile

We are about to start trying for our third child and since having DD2 five years ago my periods have gradually got shorter and shorter. Currently they just last a day and a half, when I used to be five days like clockwork.

I have been to the doctor about this and they took blood tests and nothing out of the ordinary came back after my results. I'm just panicking because I thought a period had to be longer to sustain a pregnancy. I've had other tests for mid cycle bleeding too which has also come about after DD2 but again, no explanation. It just seems since having DD2 my cycle hasn't recovered. My doctor has started asking me about menopause symptoms and I'm only 34!

So, my question is whether any of you have managed to get pregnant if your periods were shorter than the average 4-7 day cycle? Thank you very much.

I only had one period between stopping the pill and getting pregnant and it only lasted 2.5 days. Prior to babies it was 5 days.
It's not the period length but the length of the luteal phase (between ovulation and period starting) as far as I understand. Do you know when you ovulate?
Are you cycles regular from one period to another?

When I started using cloth pads my periods dropped from 6 days to 3. This was just before we started TTC and i had to same concerns. However, I'm now 6 weeks pregnant so it hasn't had any effect for me. Would it be worth telling your GP your planning to start trying and discussing any concerns with them?

I have PCOS so different, but they did a blood test 7 days before my period started to check that I had ovulated and that my hormone levels were correct for supporting a baby. Might be that they can do similar, or at least worth asking GP.

Thank you for your responses. I presumed that the GP would be doing hormone checks as they took my bloods but might ask again. The problem is that she thinks there isn't a problem because I have two children already.

Haven't tried ovulation tests but will try those. My periods are regular, as in I have one a month, but the cycle length varies and the length does too. Recently the entire cycle has been around 29 days.

Thank you all again x

Hi,

I was on the contraceptive implant for six years (two separate implants!) - once it was removed, my periods were light, only lasted three days but settled into a regular 26/27 day cycle.

I saw the doctor about it as I was concerned - like you - that because my periods were light it would affect my ability to get pregnant but they said not.

My last period was on 17th May and only lasted two days, and I'm six weeks pregnant now :)

I think you'll be fine - good luck x

Thank you f1sher that has made me feel much better. Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile
