Morning (and most of the day) sickness

I'm 7 weeks with my first baby...I feel SO sickly from the second I wake up, and it only disappears for about 2 hours in the day. I find all food smells nauseating and have to force myself to eat. How long does this usually last? Does it ease up after 12 weeks? I'm a police officer and it's really debilitating at the minute, it's really wiping me out and making my job almost impossible - I get to people's houses and just feel like I need to throw up or lie down. I can't explain to my colleagues yet why I might be coming across as a bit lazy and sluggish at present!! Sad Does anyone have any remedies, or at least any suggestions to make me feel even slightly less unwell?? X

It's totally grim. There are various anti-sickness drugs (prescription) you can take if you're being sick, but IME,they don't touch the nausea or fatigue. The important thing is to stay hydrated, even if you can only take tiny sips (at my worst I just had to let ice cubes melt in my mouth) - if you can't do this, you might need hospital treatment.

Pregnancy Sickness Support might have helpful info for you.
Good luck.

Fizzy ginger ale helped me most.

It did improve and left me by 16 weeks.

My nausea/sickness improved slightly around 21 weeks but only for about 3-4 weeks before it came back with a vengeance! I've resigned myself to having it for the rest of my pregnancy now ☹️

When it was at its worst around 10 weeks, my GP did tell me to go home to bed and treat myself as if I had flu (basically get some dvds or a book, and stay in bed until I felt improvement). I think that did help me a little bit cos I find that when I'm tired the nausea is worse. So maybe just try to get as much sleep as you possibly can around work (if u have to work and can't take a week or two off to rest) and that may improve your nausea even if only short term. X

Bless you it's grim isn't it. This hit me at 8 weeks and I'm still being sick most mornings at 26 weeks... however after about week 16 the nausea pretty much went so now I'm just sick once as soon as I wake up and after that I feel fine for the rest of the day. (So actually feels very manageable!)

Unfortunately everyone is different so it's hard to predict when it will stop for you but I hope it does soon! Xx

It's just the worst. I was not prepared for it at all. Mine lasted from around 7 weeks until 11 weeks, but I was still super tired until around 16 weeks, which is just starting to come back now at 26 weeks. The thing that worked for me mostly was sea bands, they are a little pricey for what is essentially a sweatband with a plastic bump in, but MY GOD THEY ARE MAGIC! They took my sickness from a 9 to a 5ish, which meant that although I still felt grim (tired, sluggish and generally very sad about life) I was able to go to work and get on with it rather than lay in bed and wait for death. (I am a bit dramatic I know, but thats how it felt ha). Also snacks, lots of snacks, I nibbled constantly on biscuits/almonds/dried fruit/cereal whatever didn't turn my stomach basically.
I also found it helpful to tell a handful of people at work, pre 12 weeks, just people I work with closely (direct supervisor, another lady who does my job, the admin asst in our office, a good friend in another dept). Just to avoid questions and general wondering and also for a bit of support. Maybe if you feel you can tell a couple of colleagues you trust, that might take the pressure off, so you have a little support at least.

Thank you everyone, sounds like it's hit us all hard haha! I must admit fizzy ginger does help with the nausea but then gives me heartburn - can't win Hmm

Mandraki - I'll try the Seaband, I'll try anything if it slightly improves how I feel - currently lying in bed cuddling my puppy feeling very sorry for myself and unable to move 😂😂

I'm 6weeks with #3 and the nausea is just starting, thankfully it isn't too bad ATM! With my previous pregnancies Canada Dry really helped. Also nibbling plain biscuits, sucking lollipops or boiled sweets also helped. I found that trying to eat breakfast as soon as I was able really helped too! I also developed a habit of driving with the windows open with my head out a bit like a dog eased my sickness too.
I hope you get some relief soon x

scrivette · 30/06/2017 20:34

Don't let yourself get dehydrated as it makes you feel worse (it's sometimes so hard to even drink though). Ice lollies can be good to get fluid into you.

Also I find that the nausea gets worse when hungry so have to force myself to eat.

Prescription anti sickness tablets can help, although sometimes you need to try a couple of different brands.

Hopefully it won't last too long.

Mandraki · 30/06/2017 21:05

Hope you're feeling ok again soon Flowers also agree with Scrivette about staying hydrated. I couldn't cope with the taste of water when I was early pregnant but could drink it with a bit of squash. If you keep hydrated you'll feel much better as a start!

I second sea sickness bands and boiled sweets. I also read somewhere that malice acid can help which is found in sherbet and things like the refresher sweets (not chewy ones). I chose Rhubard and Custard boiled sweets because they also had that tart sort of flavour.

It didn't fix it but eased it.

It's vile, you have my sympathies.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 30/06/2017 21:22

Malic, not malice!!

TLH0307 · 30/06/2017 22:57

Thanks everyone, I've bought some sea bands and they have already made a difference! I'd reccomend them to anyone else who might be struggling at the minute :) xx
