Due to go to a siblings wedding on Saturday and most of the younger kids have chicken pox!! I'm 23 weeks pregnant and worrying whether it's safe for me to go or should I avoid completely? I have had chicken pox as a child.

The kids shouldn't be there for a start. Normally I'd say you'd be ok as you've had chicken pox before but they are being very selfish in taking contagious children to an event where there will be lots of people. How long have they had it as when the spots have scabbed over they are no longer contagious?

Absolutely this. For all they know, one of the venue staff might be pregnant and not have had it before.

Oysterbabe · 27/06/2017 20:38

You will be fine as you've had it but they shouldn't be there if still contagious.

Thingymaboob · 27/06/2017 20:38

You're safe to go if you've had it before.

twofloorsup · 27/06/2017 20:39

I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole !

moggle · 27/06/2017 20:40

It's safe for you to go. Bizarre that they're bringing contagious kids though- but maybe crossed wires and the spots will be crusted over by then?

notagain15 · 27/06/2017 20:59

Probably but not necessarily safe. I had chicken pox as a child, or so my parents always said (spots, fever etc the week after my sister had it) but when I got an itchy rash in pregnancy and was tested for immunity to chicken pox, it was found I had none... So for the rest of the pregnancy I had to worry about it. All was fine. But I'd say not worth an avoidable risk for you. Hope it works out well whatever you decide.

Thingymaboob · 27/06/2017 21:02

You can get your midwife to test your booking bloods for chickenpox IgG or you can get it done privately for £50

Lolabee · 27/06/2017 21:13

I personally wouldn't risk going to somewhere where I knew that kids had chicken pox while I am pregnant. I think it is v irresponsible of the parents to allow them to attend when potentially contagious. Not only is there pregnant people potentially present but there is also the risk of shingles for people as well. (My nan got shingles after a cousin's child had been round with chicken pox but they hadn't realised as there was only a couple of spots initially. Nan had had cp previously too)

dementedpixie · 27/06/2017 21:21

You can only get shingles if you've had chicken pox before as it is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus. You don't get shingles from chicken pox but can get chicken pox from shingles.

PovertyPain · 27/06/2017 21:23

That's such selfish fucking behaviour. I think you should give the venue a call and give them a heads up. What happens if one if the staff have any problems with their immunity?

Lolabee · 27/06/2017 21:26

Ok. Well it reactivated her chicken pox and it manifested as shingles. However you want to put it.

periwinkle25 · 27/06/2017 21:27

Sorry I should have said in my pp that some of the children are bride and grooms children, 2 have had it and are better but the other child hasn't got it ( yet ) x

You cannot get shingles from being in contact with chickenpox. The information on that is very clear on the NHS website. However, you can get chickenpox from contact with shingles.

Lolabee · 27/06/2017 21:39

Ok. So complete coincidence then......... Not going to get into a discussion. End of day nan got shingles at 83 7 days after being in contact with cousin's child who was at beginning contagious stage of chicken pox.

Still irresponsible of the parents to take potentially contagious kids to an event like that.

Thingymaboob · 27/06/2017 21:51

Yes. Probably a coincidence. Elderly people are at more risk of developing shingles.

Emma2803 · 28/06/2017 07:00

Get your bloods checked, only way to know. If you have had it before then your good to go.
If the child who hasn't got it is a cousin (or doesn't live in the same house as the other children / spend a lot of time with them) they might not get it. 3 of my nephews/nieces (two families) had chicken pox this year, two weeks after contact with the other so nice, nephew, nephew (boys are brothers) my ds was with the two boys all day on the Fridays before their spots came out on the Monday both times and didn't get it.

OnNaturesCourse · 28/06/2017 10:45

I wouldn't go.

That said, once the children have had their "spots" come out (i.e aren't getting more appearing for a day) they are no longer contiguous. That's why it spreads so quick, people are contiguous before they know they have it.

That's not true, they are contagious until the spots have scabbed over which is Normally 5-7 days after they first appear. They are also contagious for 1-2 days before the spots appear. The incubation period is 10-21 days too
