How bad is it for me to sleep on my back?

Haven't slept properly in weeks and weeks, but last night I seemed to sleep the whole night through for the first time in months and I think it's because I slept on my back. I was so tired I don't think I actually moved!

I've read that we are not supposed to sleep on our back whilst pg (I'm 27 weeks btw) but its a toss up between that and me being delirious with sleep deprivation. Just how bad is it?

i think it is to do with the major artery too. if it is subject to too much pressure, you can go short of oxygen and have a funny turn.

Yes it is to do with the main artery and putting pressure on it. Tbh I think that if it causes you a problem, you tend to wake and move anyway. I sleep better on my back than any other position (am 22 weeks pg) but can only stay on it for about 20 minutes, then I turn over - awake or asleep. Once I get further on into pregnancy, I'll put a pillow down one side of me so that I can lie partly on my back and part on my side without putting pressure on my artery.

That's not a medical opinion btw, just my own!!

Have you got one of those long banana cushions? They're really comfortable.

I've been using one of those v cushions or a small cushion between my knees but TBH they just get in the way, if I sleep on my side I'm more like to need to turn over then the pillow just pins me down then digs in my back! By then I'm usually awake with frustration!

Just want to know that I'm not going to damage the baby without realising it...!

I'm a front or right sided sleeper so was a bit stuffed by the 'sleep on your left' thing. I found Miaou's suggestion worked for me. I put a cushion beside me and slept half on my back and half on my side. It was the only way I could kip.
