Telling work after a pay rise?

Hello!

I'm 10+2 today and due my 12 week scan next Tuesday (which will be 11+3 but everyone says thats ok?) I also have a meeting with my bosses this Wednesday which I'm pretty sure is going to be about my pay, they have been promising me a pay rise for months and we've had some very profitable months lately so I think they are going to offer me a rise at this meeting.

I need to tell work about being PG but I wanted to wait until a good time to tell them in person and ideally I wanted to wait until after the 12 week scan for obvious reasons.

Will they be annoyed at me if I accept the pay rise then a week later tell them I'm PG? Would it better for me to be honest with them at the meeting this week? What would you do?

Surely it's discrimination Stealth. And if it's discrimination it's illegal.

glitterglitters · 21/06/2017 19:06

No it's not legal to ask.

StealthPolarBear · 21/06/2017 19:11

How is it discrimination? Surely it would be discrimination to act on the info but not just to ask in the first place.
It's a stupid thing to do but not discrimination in its own right.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal and would always answer if asked that's it's not appropriate to ask a woman a question they wouldn't ask a man.

If they don't ask all their male employees, it's discrimination. If she feels they are viewing her negatively because of potentially having children it's discrimination. If they are warning her that having children will be inconvenient for the company it's discrimination. I just asked DH who is a barrister, and he said it's discrimination.

OK I stand corrected. Thanks

Good job for putting it in writing OP at least you are covered!... tbh it sounds like they had discussed the chances of you being pregnant before and were obviously very forward with you so they would have said if they had any plans to discriminate!... i wouldn't give it any further worry and just enjoy your pregnancy Smile

Definitely discrimination as they wouldnt ask a man.

My god, I am so outraged on your behalf. They arent allowed to ask about your family planning decisions, but to ask them to tell you if you start trying?? I am genuinely flabbergasted that this has happened. Really sorry you had to go through this.

Do not feel obliged to tell them amything else other than what you have to legally. On the upside, now they know you can have paid time off for all your appointments. Good luck!
