Has Midwife Ruined Gender Surprise?

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone knew if the baby's sex is recorded on the hospital's records/notes?

We chose not to find out the sex of our baby at the ultrasound, but I recently went into hospital for a CTG and saw a midwife I'd never seen before. She was there with me listening to the baby's heartbeat and was making conversation and said to me 'so you know you are having a boy then?'. I told her that we didn't know the sex and she changed the subject.

I told my usual midwife this during a routine antenatal appointment after and she seemed to think this midwife has ruined the surprise!

I didn't think they were allowed to record the sex anywhere (in case they were wrong?), so perhaps this midwife was just guessing from the heartbeat or maybe she had me confused with someone else?!

But now I'm the confused one! I suppose I should have questioned her at the time but I didn't want to know!!

Thanks all!! X

My notes did have that dd was a girl in them, but we had asked to know and I had agreed to take part in a few studies so I imagine they wanted as much information as possible. They spent well over 45 minutes at my 20 week scan trying to see what sex the baby was as dd would wriggle away and 'hide' when they put pressure on the bump. We were told it would be a 20 minute appointment and I'm sure they weren't letting me have a really long look at baby out of the kindness of their hearts. Maybe they write it down in a code and your midwife let it slip accidentally?

I can't speak for other trusts but where I work the sex of the baby is only recorded on the scan report in the notes if the woman has agreed to being told otherwise it just says 'parents requested not to be examined' so j think is more likely she's got you confused with another patient.

Still, she's got a 50:50 chance of being right Smile

Ha ! Congratulations- they don't always get it right anyway. My cousin was told she was having a girl. It was a boy.
