Should I tell my boss?

I work part time as a nanny and part time as a cook, housekeeper, general dogsbody at a B&B. I've just found out I'm pregnant, about 5 weeks. I feel ok, am eating etc but I have full aches in my stomach and I'm drained and weary.
I'm not worried about my nannying. The boys are at school and the twins sleep in the afternoon so I know I can rest if needed. I'm more concerned about the B&B. I start early, between 6.45 and 7.15 and can be there for up to 7 hours. It's pretty physical - bed stripping and changing, lifting hoovers and mop buckets. Nothing very strenuous but I'm goosed after a lazy Sunday so a bit unsure how the next couple of days will go!
My dilemma is, do I tell my boss so she can possibly make some allowances? She knew we were trying for a baby and will be thrilled for us after a fairly tough year and a half but I can't decide if it's too early yet and if I should go and see how I get on.

Well she can't make allowances for you if you don't tell her but should do so if you do, including a risk assessment.

Yes, do!

As a boss I'm always willing to make allowances for employees in special circumstances. Health, pregnancy, family issues, ... you name it. But we bosses are only people, too, we can't read minds (though the nice ones will notice if something seems off and may ask ...).

Would be different if you had a strained relationship, but you say she'll be thrilled, so no point in not asking.

Yeah, definitely tell your manager. Why would you want to keep it a secret? There's no benefit in not telling your manager.

Ok thanks for the advice Smile I definitely would tell her soon, I just wasn't sure if this was too soon if that makes sense. Ooh I'm excited! She'll be so happy Smile

I told my boss earlier than I would have liked to but he started talking about buying me new uniforms and I didn't want him to get me uniform that I may not end up wearing due to weight gain / maternity leave etc. Also means I get to sit down a bit more (although unfortunately not enough) I would tell your boss as like others said they cannot help if they are not aware of it. You might not be working as fast paced as they are used to if you are tired all the time and it would stop them telling you off for being slow etc. Also not entirely sure but aren't there some cleaning products you are supposed to avoid when pregnant?
Congrats and best of luck to you!

Fortunately I work in a very eco based B&B, we don't use any chemicals and use natural products where we need to so I'm safe on that front Smile

That's good to know Grapes I couldn't decide if I should wait a while to tell my nanny boss as well as my B&B boss. Maybe I should just tell both of them and then I'm covered
