To drink Guinness while pregnant?

I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant with my 3rd DC.
I'm aware not to drink alcohol while pregnant and I'm not much a a drinker at all anyway (a glass of red wine every now and then)

I haven't consumed any alcohol since being pregnant but I wanted to know people opinions of drinking Guinness while pregnant?

The reason I'm asking is because I've been told by a number of different people about the amount of iron that is in Guinness.

I think I have anaemia as I'm so so fatigued and weak constantly. (Please note I will be seeing my GP about this on Monday) and although being slightly anaemic with my other two DC while pregnant I feel that this time round is worse.

I'm also aware that there are loads of ways to up my iron levels, I've researched what to eat and supplements I can take to help.

I literally wanted to ask about Guinness because so many people have told me about it and wanted to hear other mums opinions who maybe have had a glass while pregnant and made them feel better?

Anyway I'm babbling on now 🙈 so will leave it here

It's an old wives tale. There is more iron in countless foods and they won't hurt your baby.

Oysterbabe · 17/06/2017 12:18

Google tells me the iron content is 0.1mg per litre – almost nothing. You could get the same amount of iron from eating about 15 garden peas.

I'm not sure whilst pregnant but my breast feeding helper person at the hospital told me to drink stout/Guinness. I was very happy! Grin

Spatone iron supplement is pretty in-offensive and safe, you just add it to orange juice.

Simples.

(That said I have had the odd small glass of wine in pregnancy so I see nothing against small amounts per se but you'd need to drink a lot of Guinness to get a benefit which would be outweighed by the negative impact)

BertieBotts · 17/06/2017 12:29

Likely to be no harm from the occasional pint of Guinness but it really doesn't contain that much iron.

Try Spatone instead. GP will probably give you tablets which are even better.

ijustwannadance · 17/06/2017 12:31

Take iron tablets.

You can tell I haven't actually researched Guinness lol but thank you for opinions on it.

Will 100% be seeing my GP on Monday for iron tablets, also need to cook more iron rich meals.

I know prescriptions are free when pregnant but iron tablets are dirt cheap.

Lexilooo · 17/06/2017 13:15

My mum was given it in hospital when pregnant and breast feeding. I'm OK 😁

However you'd be better off eating some red meat, and make sure that you don't drink tea within half an hour of a meal as it inhibits iron absorption, a glass of orange juice on the other hand would be helpful.

BaronessBomburst · 17/06/2017 13:43

Dark chocolate and cocoa powder are also very high in iron.

RebornSlippy · 17/06/2017 13:51

Guinness is alcohol and alcohol is not recommended in pregnancy. As most of you know, I'm sure. Either get your iron from haem (meat) or non-haem (veg) food sources or take a supplement.

Pinkheart5919 · 17/06/2017 13:54

It's an old wives tale,Your honestly get more iron from food than from Guinness

Could you or your dh/dp get to the shops and cook an iron rich meal today or tomorrow?

Gp will sort you out Monday

BertieBotts · 17/06/2017 14:38

I'm sure iron tablets are cheap but I'd get the GP's advice to know what strength to take because TBH I'd have no idea. They might even give you a blood test for ferritin as well.

LadyTennantofTardis · 17/06/2017 15:33

I have Mackersons, it's low alcohol, about 3% I think.

KissMyShoe · 17/06/2017 16:38

My mum was saying she was given it in the hospital too after she had either me or my brother. Was obviously a back in the day thing, you wouldn't imagine them doing that now lol.

Feel a lot better after I had a broccoli lunch lol and managed to get up and clean the house a bit lol

Were your bloods not done at your booking appointment? If you were anaemic at that point they'd have got in touch. Are you taking pregnancy vitamins with iron in them? It takes 6 weeks to make a new red blood cell so anything you start now won't 'work' for 6 weeks although you do make some new immature red bloods cells after 3 weeks. There are plenty of other reasons to feel unwell on pregnancy so don't assume it's anaemia.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 17/06/2017 17:03

Yep old wives tale but strangely my 1st pregnancy symptom was a sudden urge for a pint of freezing cold Guinness which I'd never liked before, very weird.

KissMyShoe · 17/06/2017 18:22

I've never tried Guinness before lol

I did have booking bloods done which were ok at the time but that was 10 weeks ago
