Brown discharge for the past 2 days

Hi all,

I'm currently 6 weeks pregnant. I had spotting on the 4th week. I've been having brown discharge for the past 2 days.

Here's some questions I have with regards to my current situation:
Could I get a scan done if I go to A&E?
Should I get an early scan? I heard inexperienced staff may not be able to see anything at 6 weeks.
How many more scans do I get after that?
Does it matter which hospital I get it done in? Does it mean I will be allocated to that hospital for the rest of my pregnancy? Are hospitals different?
Next Monday is the earliest appointment doctor can find me. Is it worth waiting for an appointment at a better hospital?

Thanks for helping.

Hi Littleleslie,

From what I understand brown blood is old blood so not too much of a concern. I think it's when it's bright and heavy and you have cramps that is more he issue.

A&E won't see you. Your best bet is to see if you can find your like EPU (early pregnancy unit). But as you say if they do scan you they may not see anything just yet. I was asked at my 8 week booking appointment which hospital I wanted to give birth in but I think it's not set in stone.
You get 2 scans on the NHS. One at 12 weeks roughly (dating scan) and another at 20 which they look for abnormalities and check to see baby is growing as they should. Any other scans you have to pay private for. (In the U.K. Not sure where you are).

Hope that all helped. Hope everything is ok which I'm sure it is. The first weeks before your first scan are the worst! I know mine were filled with dread and worry but once you have the first scan and everything is fine you can relax a little x

Hi I'm in the same boat as you. But I went to the hospital straight away and they scanned me and you can see alittle 4mm dot which is the baby. You won't be allocated to that hospital so don't worry on that they will just want to scan you again in a week to check that is growing. But I'm worried just as you are and I've had a scan. So don't worry just seek some medical advice there's no harm in that.

Hello. Everything I have read says that brown blood is fine as it's old. I'm sure that's the case in the vast majority of cases, it wasn't for me, so get it checked, it will most likely be fine, but just in case.
I'd also advise not going too early for a scan. I went at 6 weeks, everything was 'well' but at 12 weeks, after suffering from some very light, brown bleeding a scan showed nothing had changed since that 6 week scan. I wish I'd gone at 7 weeks and there would have been no heartbeat then, saving 5 weeks of 'wasted' time.
This current pregnancy I made sure I didn't have an early scan too early, as it reasured me under false pretences the first time.

My situation was very rare though.

Brown blood is usually fine but you can definitely go to a&e if you're getting stressed and upset. But if you can wait for Monday it's always best to. I'm assuming you're in the UK for the rest of my answers btw.

I paid private for an early scan at 7 weeks after a precious miscarriage. It was lovely and the staff were great. But the NHS in the U.K. wont do one without medical need.

I've had my 12 Week dating scan, my 20 Week anatomy scan, I've got a 30 week scan booked in and I'll have another at 34, 36, 38, 40 (and if overdue 41&42) weeks. (Just checked my book for those dates).

Doesn't matter which hospital you go to as when you have your booking in appt the midwives will go through which hospital you want to go to etc.

No you won't be allocated to that hospital for the rest of your pregnancy. You will meet a midwife at your booking in appt, then go to whichever hospital is convenient and is able to do maternity scans closest to you, then you will be referred to your community midwives at 25 weeks. This is unless you have complications or a high risk pregnancy in which case you might be referred to an obstetrician who will either clear you for midwife care or come up with a new plan with you seeing and obstetrician for part of or all of your pregnancy.

Good luck!
