PRISM trial?

Has anyone been invited into the PRISM trial? It's for women who have bled in the first trimester and they are trialling whether extra progesterone helps.

I'm unsure what to do..... it involved inserting suppositories twice a day until 16 weeks. There is a chance I might be given a placebo. Not sure I want to go through having to do that for 6 weeks for no point, but equally it could be the hormone and might help.

Any thoughts?

I did it! I had pessaries to insert and I got the hang of it really easily and it wasn't any trouble at all. The way I saw it was that it wouldn't do me or the baby any harm and could only potentially do good. I couldn't see any downsides in that! No idea if I had the progesterone or placebo but baby is currently kicking away at 27 weeks. Oh, and you get a lovely scan at 16 weeks Smile

I was part of the PRISM trial after i had bleeding in my second pregnancy. I'd had a previous miscarriage. Sadly i lost the second baby too so the trial didn't work for me, though it did appear to stop the bleeding.

I didn't find it too hard going. You need lots of panty liners though! The staff at the hospital were lovely and supportive. I'd definitely recommend it.

I took part in the trial this time last year. I had bleeding at 10 weeks which coincided with an ovarian cyst so may have been connected to that. I had miscarried before so was happy to try anything for the chance it may work! I also wanted to help to be a part of something that could prevent other women having to go through miscarriage themselves.

The pessaries really weren't too bad, no different to inserting a tampon and its a minute out of your day twice a day. The bleeding settled within a few days, the pregnancy was successful and I now have a beautiful 5 month old who is more than worth the inconvenience!

I have no idea whether the progesterone made any difference whatsoever or even whether I was on progesterone at all or a placebo but for me I felt that I had the opportunity to try something, anything at all to give my baby the best chance. Now she's here the pessaries are a distant memory and were such a small part of the pregnancy I had actually not thought about them even during follow up appointments until I read your post.

Best of luck with your pregnancy whatever you decide, nobody would judge you if you don't want to do it but you may find it is very little inconvenience at all. You can also stop at any time if you do find it unpleasant.

I didn't get an extra scan at 16 weeks though so don't get your hopes up!

I've had these prescribed preventatively by a private gyneo after having two miscarriages, I'm now 16w3d :)

I took part. Had bleeding from 4 weeks until i was invited to start the trail at around 9 weeks. No bleeding once i started with the pessaries.

Now 28 weeks and everything go8ng well.

Pessaries are messy but easy enough to use, just need to stock up on panty liners.

I am hoping to find out whether i jad progesterone or placebo once the trial finishes.

P.s i wasnt offered any additional scans. They said they would get all the information they needed from my birth records.

Gynae Mr Miskry at st Mary's London offered to prescribe these privately for me - didn't use them in the end but luckily had a sticky pg. if you can afford private gynae that would be another option. If you've had full recent NHS bloods you can take to them I guess it might be one appointment at say £250 and the cost of the drugs.

Thanks everyone. Your replies have reassured me that it's not too invasive. I guess if I don't do it and start bleed again, I might always wonder if I could have prevented it. I've emailed them so hopefully they will get back to me tomorrow.

Thanks again! X

I'm currently mid way through it. I reasoned there was no risk to me or baby, just some inconvenience a couple of minutes a day, and there could be a benefit if I was given the progesterone. I'm pretty much in the routine of the pessaries now and just over half way through.
