1st time mum, I'm 29 and 29 weeks pregnant. Work full time, have a fantastic partner, engaged, been together 4 years. These are the latest comments from my mum: "you won't cope at the birth you should ask for a c section now"
"You won't cope with being a mum, you and him will break up."
"You are having a whooping cough vaccination? Is that wise? I wouldn't. What if something happens to the baby?"
"I don't think you realise how tired you will be."
Good grief. My 2 other sisters popped out babies in less ideal situations when they were 21. They got support! Maybe she just doesn't want a 6th grandchild!

I do feel for you! Didn't get the whole you won't cope thing but I did get the 'I warned you' 'told you so' Sod off. Luckily enough I live far away from DM so I only tell her what I think she wants to hear now. You will cope in labour, everyone does in some way! Just don't let your DM interfere and stay strong with your partner. Maybe it's your mothers own insecurities.

Tell her to butt out. Hugs for you

Ear plugs. Seriously you need to block her out. She sounds awful!

Yes. Ignore. Am 57 and still trying to please mine. MIL is marginally better although her delightful refrain after 4 losses was "such a shame you can't perform".

mysecret321 · 15/06/2017 07:32

Omg! I'd tell her that if she thinks you won't cope it's because she didn't bring you up properly! That should shut her up! Seriously it's better to contain this sort of behaviour at this stage then later when you have a newborn x

ohtheroses my god that's AWFUL!

OP my mother is a bit like that too although not as bad, I think, or else I'm just used to it. But she was convinced I would sink into a deep postnatal depression because we were moving when my two were 24 mo and 9 weeks. "How will you cope? You won't have any support." (I did t get much support anyway I might add!) and then when I was slow to loose the baby weight because I was BF and eating everything not nailed down I was clearly "depressed". 🙄 ironically I'm actually happier now than I was before, perhaps because I'm away from her!!

My mum is batshit crazy in many ways, and I created a to help me deal with her once I had my DS. You can have it if you like - Repeat after me: "I'm the mum now"
Use in your head (or out loud!) as needed when you need to block out the crazy from her....

A mantra! Forgot the key word there!

I just thought she might have a little excitement but nah, nothing. She just tells me how bad it's all going to be! Funny she has that opinion because she had 5 of us so can't be that bad. I've spoken to my sister who had advised me to not divulge any information to her so she can't criticise. She also reassured me that having a child has it perks! I've also decided that I won't tell her when I go into labour, the original plan was to have her at the birth but I know I will say "I can't do this" because I'm a normal person, and she will jump on that and say "I did tell you, you wouldn't be able to do this!"
It's strange, she has been my best friend and rock forever, until I got pregnant. Now it's almost as if she is disappointed in me.

I feel you! My mum is okay but my MIL is just like this, trying to force me into having someone else (her) at the birth, trying to tell us what to name child as her names were better. Trying to 'advise' and get me to do what she wants just because her daughter did everything she was told!
