Never even thought anything of it but when I went for my 20 week scan and asked the gender I said I think its a boy and her response was "I think your right" but she didnt shownme anything I was then a bit preoccupied for the rest of the scan and then was told about my placenta being at the bottom so started thinking more about that so I said right at the end after she spent 30mins struggling to get the details.she needed "so I am ok to go out and by blue?" Rather than being rude and saying r u sure! And thinking back to it she didnt do a potty shot look it was a side on quick look and said "Yeah I think so dont think that will go anywhere" but I couldnt really see what she was looking at.....que me walking out right a boy (already have a girl) started selling all her old clothes and buying blue and only when at a party today and speaking to another pregnant Mum who was asking about the scan 4 weeks ago and I told her and she said "and your happy enough to take that as its a boy as I wouldnt be happy with that response." RESULTING IN ME SLIGHTLY WORRIED!

I would take from that that you're having a boy. I am told male genitals are quite obvious on the scan so maybe she thought you could see them.

As you know, it's not the point of the scan so sometimes the sonographer/radiologist/midwife can be a bit prickly about it. At my 20 scan with DD I tried to say at start we'd like to know and was snapped at to wait till the end for questions. At the end she told me off for not saying I wanted to know and said she hadn't looked. Felt a bit crap as I was v happy she was healthy, and still left feeling upset at how she'd told me off.

If you like, you could book yourself a private scan to check?

kizzle · 11/06/2017 18:58

You could always book a private gender scan where they focus just on that part for reassurance?

ashleighbean · 11/06/2017 19:06

Yeah I was a bit worried about asking and my husband couldnt come to the scan so I waited and nervously said "if you've got time and its in a position to see could I know the gender" she was quite young and was like "yeah of course not a problem" and i just stayed silent till she said what do youn think it might be.
The only other time it crossed my mind was in Next last week behind a lady with a girl in a pram after being told she was having a boy at 20/28 weeks which will be the same hospital I am using.

Cant do anything about it of course and I am happy either way but its when people ask and look at me strange and then say I was sure you were having a girl with your pregnancy so far........thanks I'll be the one wondering whilst these people are hoping to say "told you so" lol

We had a scan privately at 14wk due to bleeding and again she said "could be a boy but also could be a girl as they look the same till this point on some people so I dont want to commit" so husband doesnt want tonpay for anymore private ones

Ahh just wait until d-day & look forward to a surprise then! ☺️

I hve scans every 2 weeks due to being pregnant with twins, I am pregnant with two boys. We were told at the 20 week scan and it's been confirmed at every scan since. Boys bits are very obvious! Even I spotted it straight away.

Lofari · 11/06/2017 19:51

Don't take such vague answers for granted OP they do get it wrong. My last pregnancy many my 20 week scan the sonagraoher said she thought it was a girl......
Hes 2 soon and bloody isn't!!

Lol thanks everyone because of my placenta issues I have another scan so might try get a sneaky peak then....if not September it is then lol. Only ever having a daughter before where we had a private scan at 19 weeks as our NHS hospital at the time where we lived wouldnt tell you and she showed us exactly what a girl looked like I dont have too much of an idea what to quickly look for in a boy besides the obvious lol

I wouldn't have taken that as a solid answer tbh.

I've known a few people who've been told they're having a boy because it's evident only to give birth to girls to be told it's actually quite common for little girls to have swollen genitals and be mistaken for boys.

The chances are the sonographer was happy to do so but was distracted by the difficult position of your placenta whilst trying to check that all was well.

Our hospital has signs up stating that they will not under any circumstances tell the gender due to inconsistencies and disgruntled parents.

BertieBotts · 11/06/2017 20:50

You should never take the scan as a given as they can get it wrong.

They do say it tends to be more accurate when they say they think it's a boy though. But IMO I wouldn't be selling girls' bits if it matters to you to dress the baby in the "right" gender clothing. Wait until they come out and sell/buy later.

On the plus side the baby won't mind Grin and it's nice for them to have some new bits regardless of what colour they are.

ashleighbean · 11/06/2017 21:48

Lol luckily the things I sold are age 3-4 yrs which she has just come out of and she had a ton of clothes for that age so stopped listing anything now lol. Husband is dead convinced a boy so hes not fussed hes saying its creating space in the house...I just keep having this niggling feeling now they are wrong which is probably my over thinking mind
