Why is my baby measuring so big?!

Just wondering if anyone out there had a baby measure big who was born smaller?

Freaking out a bit as I am predicted to have a 9lb10 baby as my scan and bump are measuring big. They are saying they may have to induce at 38-39 weeks which I really don't want.

I am not a big person, 8.5 stone pre-pregnancy, I haven't gained much weight and I'm not really eating any extra calories, I just eat when I feel hungry. Had the glucose tolerance test and that was normal. The consultant told me to eat less sweets/drink less coke. I don't eat sweets or drink sugary drinks! I don't have a sweet tooth and I'm vegetarian so try to follow a healthy diet. I feel like they don't believe me when I say o eat healthily.

DS1 was 7lb2 and he was 11 days late. He caused me enough trauma!

So I'm hoping you may be able to put my mind at rest by telling me your weight predictions were wrong and I'm going to have a normal sized baby!?!

This is all reassuring. I was told at 36 weeks baby was 7lb 10oz already. Now 39 weeks and hoping they were wrong. 1st baby was 8lb 13oz at 41+3

arbrighton · 07/06/2017 19:48

Last growth scan at 33 weeks, was est at 5lb 8 already, going up from 70ish to 90th centile.
Bump now off scale at 36 weeks, measuring 38.5 cm but have last scheduled growth scan next week.

Not even like baby is long, femurs are short

Like PP have said there is huge room for error. My DD was measuring big, and it turned out she was tall. Current DD is measuring bigger still. I am the same as you, put on a reasonable amount of weight(10kg at 38 weeks compared to pre preg). I had fine results on glucose testing too. The midwife gave me the diet advice in a friendly tone this week too. I politely told her that I would follow her advice about being careful on.sugar etc but that being 5ft 7, DH 6ft2 and a 2yo DD who is tall and lanky measuring way.about her age, my baby was never going to be little and that was fine by me ;)

Crapbags · 07/06/2017 20:08

My first was 7.4lb and exactly like you was told second baby was measuring big had all the gestational diabetic checks all fine, was told he would likely be 10-11lb. Again like you I'm fairly small weigh 8-8.5 stone usually and didn't put on huge amounts of weight. He came 5 days early and weighed 9.4lb and like a PP said he was by far the easier labour:) good luck!

I had a growth scan at 28 weeks and was told my baby was 50th centile for everything except his head which was on the 98th centile! Anyway he arrived at a very tiny 5lb 13 - not even heavy enough to be on the age/weight chart in his red book. He has caught up since though.

I have also heard that heavier babies are easier to give birth too though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/06/2017 08:15

I had 3w scans due to age and ivf and always told baby was big

Meant to have a 9.5/10lb

Dd was 7.3 when evicted at 39.5

So totally wrong :)

And thank god as getting her out was hard enough. Let alone another 2/3 on top !!!

Vanillaradio · 08/06/2017 08:53

I had growth scans every 2 weeks from 28 weeks (diabetes). They told me throughout that ds was huge, above 90th centile. I was admitted to hospital for other reasons at 36 weeks and told ds was nearly 9lb already. He was born a week later weighing 7lb 5oz! So yeah, not necessarily accurate.. ..

Sunnywithadashofgin · 08/06/2017 08:57

My baby was 10lb3, they checked me twice for diabetes and checked him when we left the hospital. Everything was fine, birth was fine, no intervention etc. Just had reduced movements at the end. I had a growth scan which predicted 9lb8! I was induced at 41 weeks, laboured for about 3 hours in total. I remember how anxious I was because all you hear is awful stories but it was completely fine Smile

sassylocks · 08/06/2017 09:01

Don't worry it's really not accurate. I had growth scans every 2 weeks and was told by several consultants that my DS was going to be 10-11 pounds minimum. He was born by induction at 39 weeks and 8lbs 12 Grin

ClarkWGriswold · 08/06/2017 09:05

I was told by my midwife that scans can be out by 2lbs either way.

I measured big for my DD2 so they gave me a c section at 39+4. She was 10lbs and I was grateful at being offered a c section. DD1 was 6lbs!

sarebear1983 · 08/06/2017 09:26

My bump was being measured at between 8 and 9 pounds at 37 weeks so I was shitting myself, especially as I went to 41+3 before my waters broke!
My baby was 7 pound 10, I don't know what's normal as he is my first but I had a massive amount of fluid when my waters broke so perhaps that contributed to the large bump size xx

silkpyjamasallday · 08/06/2017 09:29

The scans aren't always accurate so bear that in mind, mine was spot on for dd who was born at 7lbs 8.5oz but our friend was induced because her baby was 'too small' predicted 5-6lbs born at almost 9lbs.

Anditstartsagain · 08/06/2017 21:14

I was double the size with ds1 than with ds2 they turned out at 7lbs 3oz at 41+1 and 7lbs 1oz at 39+4 so the bump size meant nothing for me. My sister was told she would have a big baby maybe 8/9lbs and had a 5lbz 14oz baby 2 days before her due date.

ChuffCloud · 29/06/2017 19:22

Thanks for your lovely comments! DS2 was born 11 days early measuring 8lb. So not too huge though he would have been bigger if I'd been full term :)

3littlebadgers · 29/06/2017 19:25

I was predicted a big baby, scanned throughout due to previous full term stillbirth and he was 6lb only. He still is in 9-12 months even at 17 months old!

Crapbags · 29/06/2017 21:00

Congratulations ChuffCloudFlowers 8lb is a lovely weight!

What did you call him?

EdgeOfGlory266 · 29/06/2017 21:18

I was told at 36 weeks I was measuring at 41+ and that my boy was going to be over 10lbs. He was 7lb 5oz 🙄

CheapAndCheerful100 · 29/06/2017 21:42

Congratulations OP. Flowers my biggest was 9lb5oz and she was bigger than they predicted. She was also my easiest birth Wink

ChuffCloud · 29/06/2017 22:43
