Spotting at 18 weeks?

Started spotting yesterday, mostly only when wiping and even then not every time I go to the toilet.
Initially it was only light pinkish but today has become a bit redder. Still only when wiping though.
I've had some cramping but it's very difficult to tell if thats related or it's IBS cramps as they're very similar. (And TMI but I've not had a bm for a few days - normal for me when pregnant though.) They've also been on and off for the past two days and not always located in the same place, sometimes it's my back and sometimes I feel it more in my side or low down in my hips. Different to period cramping which is always across the centre of my abdomen.

I can't think of anything that has happened or that I've done over the past few days that might have caused any bleeding.
Should add that today the blood/discharge was quite stringy.
I'll probably call the midwife tomorrow if it carries on as I am quite concerned, I just wondered if anyone had experience with anything similar?

I'd go to a&e if I were you...

I had a bleed with my youngest at 18 weeks. I popped up to a&e and all was fine. Hope it's the same for you Smile

I've had spotting in 3 pregnancies- 1st one ended in heavy bleeds, a missed miscarriage then ERPC. 2nd is now learning how to walk. And then this pregnancy. All were in the first trimester.
So spotting doesn't worry or concern me a huge deal, however I've never experienced it any later than 8 weeks and wondered if anyone else had and what their outcome/cause was.

I'm aware that I could be coming across as quite apathetic but I'm not. I'm just realistic. I know full well this might be the start of a miscarriage. Or it could be placenta previa, a UTI, bacterial infection, irritated cervix or just one of those random things.
I just don't see how spending a few hours in a+e (only to be referred to the antenatal assessment unit, who I will call in the morning anyway) for very mild spotting and very mild cramping is practical.
If it was heavy bleeding, clots or painful cramps then I'd be at a+e now however.

When I say bleed at 18 weeks it was fresh red with clots and in my area there is no epau after you are 15 weeks but mau won't see you until you're 22 weeks so it was a&e or nothing for me. If you're happy to wait and don't feel it's urgent then call in the morning. If it helps at all I've had heavy third trimester bleeds and baby has been fine.

I had spotting from 14-16 weeks. Every day but only on wiping and no cramps. When I finally got someone to see me it was cervical ectropion which is basically just irritation of the cervix. Now 30 weeks ans haven't had any issues since.

Defo go get it checked out for peace of mind but I agree that there isn't a lot of point going to a+e unless bleeding is heavy or accompanied by cramping

I'm.just going to update this as I really hate when I come across threads like this with no resolution.

I came to the assessment unit today to be checked out. The spotting had become a bit heavier, but more brown than red. The doctor scanned and unfortunately couldn't find a heartbeat. Obviously I'm absolutely devastated by this news but there's no amount of visiting a+e or calling up midwives that could have prevented it. So thank you everyone who gave me some advice. Smile
