Icecream and choc ices

Grrr - craving a choc ice (curr 18.5 weeks) first pregnancy - went to M&S only to be told that if the choc ices were pasteurised milk then it would state that on the ingredients..... the ingredients did list 'pasteurised egg' but then just milk/whole milk from concentrate.
The staff said not to risk it.
When I also looked in Waitrose at their choc ices - similar thing - it just listed 'milk'.
I know generally advice is that Mr whippy icecream should be avoided along with homemade icecream... but am surprised the big retailers don't state if milk/egg products are pregnancy-safe or not.
Really don't want to take any risks whatsoever.
Advice super-welcome!!!!

Oh I've been having lots of ice cream from vans and ice cream counters, didn't even think about it.

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/06/2017 17:00

It is all pasteurised, it has to be. To use raw milk in ice cream would be very unusual and would have to be clearly labelled as such. Anything you buy from a mainstream retailer will be pasteurised. The staff were being ultra cautious with you, presumably because they don't have enough understanding of what you were asking them.

Creatureofthenight · 02/06/2017 17:00

I really doubt they are using milk straight from the cow in an M & S choc ice!

Lules · 02/06/2017 17:01

The milk will definitely be pasteurised. Eat away!

fruitpastille · 02/06/2017 17:03

I think you are only supposed to avoid Mr whippy in case the machine hasn't been cleaned well. Any other ice cream is fine!

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/06/2017 17:04

The advice about Mr Whippy type ice cream is not to do with whether it's pasteurised its to do with cleanliness, listeria I think. I also think it's outdated advice too given modern food hygiene standards.

I've no idea why homemade ice cream would be an issue, the milk will be pasteurised and it will be in your freezer, just like all your other freezer foods. Raw egg maybe? But if you use lion mark eggs then the risk of salmonella is minute.

Hmmalittlefishy · 02/06/2017 17:05

I don't think you can buy 'raw' milk from shops anyway I'm sure I read somewhere some from harrods got taken away.
All ice cream and choc ices etc will be fine
Avoid Mr whippy from ice cream vans
Mcflurries are also OK too as they have tough cleaning routines
Enjoy!!

Hmmalittlefishy · 02/06/2017 17:06

Homemade ice cream should be fine too as you normally cook eggs in a custard before freezing it

Chickpearocker · 02/06/2017 17:08

Why no more mr whippy ? Blush

Pastaagain78 · 02/06/2017 17:14

It's fine, as others have said, Mr Whippy is because of the listeria risk if the machine is not very clean. Homemade is because of raw egg. Shop bought is fine. If it contained raw milk it would have to say so. Assume it's pasturised unless otherwise stated. It's ridiculous that the staff didn't know this's

Cel982 · 02/06/2017 17:14

Of course the milk will be pasteurised! Don't deprive yourself of ice-cream for nine months, you'll never make it.

Ollivander84 · 02/06/2017 17:21

Mcflurry is fine
I'm not pregnant and I won't touch Mr Whippy - my nan contracted listeria and was in intensive care for a long time. None of us eat it now

AsereT123 · 02/06/2017 17:34

Thanks all!! Right I know where I'm heading off too.
@creatureofthenight - your post particularly made me giggle - you're right of course, seems logical... but you have to ask the question! & the M&S staff all seemed to suggest I should avoid it!

I'm being over cautious about everything (as had 2 x MC's in past - before 12 wks).
Off to stock up on choc ices then!
Much appreciated - all your advice. (over-cautious first timer!)

My midwife told me no mcflurries much to my despair! Maybe she was being a bit over cautious

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/06/2017 18:01

Last year there were 169 cases of listeriosis in England & Wales, which is 0.29 cases per 100,000 people. It is very very rare.

passthewineplz · 02/06/2017 18:23

Shop bought ice cream is fine. The staff at the supermarket were probably being cautious.

Enjoy your treat OP! 🍧

dementedpixie · 02/06/2017 18:25

The packaging would have to state if it used unpasteurised milk not the other way round. They are all perfectly safe

reallybadidea · 02/06/2017 18:29

Homemade ice cream is also fine. Lion marked eggs are fine to eat raw, and ice cream usually has cooked egg (custard) anyway.

cheeeekyavocado · 02/06/2017 18:31

I've been eating choc ices, mcflurries and god knows what else till it's coming out of my ears.
It will be fine.
