Hello
I found out last week I am pregnant, I am currently 5 +3 weeks. Well I have just rang the doctors to tell them I have had a positive test, I assumed the doctor would do a test as well to confirm the pregnancy? But instead I have been referred straight to the midwife team, so I have rang them and am now awaiting an appointment.
I know this is really trivial but I have no one else I can ask IRL as I don't want anyone to know yet except for my best friend who is currently pregnant through IVF so did not follow normal procedure anyway.
Is this the normal way it is done now?
Thanks in advance

This is how it's done now, my DS I expected to need to do a test at the doctors. So I went and explained that I got a positive in home pregnancy test but he just laughed and said "you're pregnant then" and told me to book in with the midwife.

You do have to let the doctor know you're pregnant which feels stupid just to go and tell them you're pregnant and then book yourself in with the midwife but oh well, I guess that's what you got to do lol.

Congratulations on your pregnancy

Yes that's normal here. The tests they would do are the same as the one you'll have bought. Once you're in contact with midwife team they'll organise your booking in appt for about when you are about 8-9wks. That's just paperwork really, and blood tests, either at the same time.or just after. Then 12wk scan. Congratulations!

Carlz84 · 01/06/2017 14:25

Congratulations!

Yep, it's normal. I was due a nurse appointment at GP practice anyway and she kindly confirmed my pregnancy for me as I wasn't 100% convinced that I was actually pregnant! Some places just give you the number to book in with the Midwife, some GP's/nurses will see you for an appointment it take your word for it and not do a test. The first time you have it confirmed is at your 12 weeks scan normally.

PotteringAlong · 01/06/2017 14:25

Yes. No one does anything but take your word for it until your 12 week scan.

booellesmum · 01/06/2017 14:27

Congratulations!
I had mine 15 and 12 years ago but the GP didn't do blood test to confirm even back then. They said if home test was positive they accepted that and just referred to midwife.
The midwife will then sort out all the paperwork and scans.

Totally normal. I was just given the number and told to ring the midwives myself.....

monkey1978 · 01/06/2017 14:34

That's great thanks everyone , I have very few symptoms so I have convinced myself I am not even pregnant and they must be mad just to take my word for it!! ha ha
yes, I was just given a number and told to ring the midwives too.

Totally normal. I even had a prescription issued for folic acid without seeing the dr based on my self referral to the midwife

Obviously in the minority here but my GP wouldn't refer me until I had been seen.... wish there was a standard system as I had been told that the OP's experience was normal.

GrumpyOldBag · 02/06/2017 22:05

yes, that was the system even 18 years ago when I had my first child.

Over the counter pregnancy tests very reliable.
