Fed up, fat and frumpy

I'm 15 weeks today (yay!) and honestly feel like the side of a house.

I don't think my eating patterns have changed much, although I'm sick quite lot so there are things I avoid. The weight gain is just crazy, I refuse to have scales in the house so I can't obsess over numbers but I'm really worried I'm going to go to my next midwife appointment in a few weeks and be told I'm crazy fat.

At 5'10 and roughly between 11.5 & 12.5 stone I have already been classed as a high BMI of 30.1 by my midwife... And that was 6 weeks ago.

I've got a bump, a small one but definitely one but I feel like I'm carrying weight everywhere especially my hips and butt which I keep banging into everything.

I've always thought of myself as slim and this is really getting to me as I feel it's too early to be noticing all this weight and width... And it's only my 1St!

What am I doing wrong?

I'm a bit confused how your midwife got a BMI of 30.1 if your 5ft 10in & roughly 12 stone.
I've just put your measurements on the NHS BMI calculator and you can be up to 12stone 7lbs to stay in the 'healthy' BMI range up to 25.
Sorry that part just stuck out to me!

OnNaturesCourse · 01/06/2017 13:06

It's just what's on my files that I read.

And you're not doing anything wrong.
I was a healthy 24 bmi pre-pregnancy and am now classed as 'overweight' on bmi calculators as I am 5ft 8in & weigh 12 stone. I'm 31 weeks pregnant so I can only imagine my weight will rocket in these last 8-9 weeks but I know I can lose it after birth.
FWIW I was only weighed at my booking in appt and haven't been weighed since.

arbrighton · 01/06/2017 13:08

Well they calculated your BMI way wrong for starters!

I get it as 24 and a bit for you, even with the heaviest weight.

I was only BMI 27 at booking in, weighing about 13 stone and a couple of inches shorter than you.

And there is ZERO point in doing your BMI now. I've felt lumpy throughout and I'm now 35 weeks. YOu do get clumsier during pregnancy to apparently.

kizzle · 01/06/2017 13:08

To get a bmi of 30.1 at 5ft 10in you would be classed as obese and you should weigh 15 stone.
I would ask about it at your next appt because it's clearly wrong.

HerOtherHalf · 01/06/2017 13:09

All you're doing wrong is worrying about it. You're growing a beautiful new life inside you, how amazing is that? BMIs are only a very rough guide with a high margin of error. You'll have plenty of time to get back in shape in the future. For now, just keep healthy and happy. As long as you "feel" ok, who cares about a number?

DoubleCarrick · 01/06/2017 13:11

You're growing a life, op. You may feel frumpy but you're beautiful --helpful, not helpfu

OnNaturesCourse · 01/06/2017 13:27

So I've raked through my file and my record shows:
Height: 1.57m (5'11)
Weight: 76kg (11.97stone)
BMI: 30.1

But having looked at the figures on the NHS site my BMI should be 23.3 ! I just took the file record as correct as my midwife done it.

I know I shouldn't fret over numbers but I do, hint why scales are banned from my house. So after feeling fat and frumpy then realizing these figures on file classed me as heavier I got upset and worried.

Feel better as I now know I started off better than I thought but I still think I'm putting weight on super quick!! My clothes only just fit, I had this stupid expectation they would fit until 5/6 months... My Mother was in her normal clothes throughout her whole pregnancy with me. Silly expectation maybe?

Should I bring up the BMI at my next appointment though?

they've converted your height wrong it should be 1.77m!

OnNaturesCourse · 01/06/2017 13:31

I think they've just screwed up all over...

OP posts:
arbrighton · 01/06/2017 13:32

Right, 1) you are not your mother, don't compare. Don't compare yourself to ANYONE else.

Hell my mother was underweight until she had me whereas I have always been the type to look at a biscuit and weight goes on unless I'm training (not exercising, TRAINING)

And nope, my clothes didn't fit from about the stage you're at now. My boobs had grown 3 sizes and bump had started.

Midwives aren't infallible. But this should be noted that your start BMI was in fact normal as it may affect risk levels etc

OnNaturesCourse · 01/06/2017 13:38

Yeah, my height was way wrong on the forms, and I think that's mucked it all up. Thank you xx

I was in maternity clothes at 10 weeks...get something comfy and flattering to the shape you are now and are becoming and you will feel much better. Trying to squeeze into too tight clothes is depressing and makes you look and feel bigger than you are. Congratulations and good luck with your pregnancy x

Sparklyuggs · 01/06/2017 15:49

Another one who was in maternity jeans at 10 weeks, I've never understood how women can wear their normal clothes as none of mine fit! I gained a lot (relatively) at the start due to not moving and eating a ton of carbs but it slowed down. I remember feeling better with my shape about 20 weeks when I had a proper bump rather than just looking bigger.

OnNaturesCourse · 01/06/2017 18:04

Yes! I think I'll feel so much better when my bump is noticeable to those who don't know me. I think to everyone I just look chubby but those that know me and my flat stomach are adamant bump is clearly a bump.

Just feeling low and then seeing that BMI made it worse. I think I need to go shopping to cheer me up but I don't want to spend a fortune 😒 any recommendations?

My staples are all H&M; skinny over bump jeans (you will never look back, so comfy and flattering), long vests (not maternity) and loose top combos. Over bump leggings are also comfortable and now it's warmer long empire line dresses. I've a few bits from Asos too and ebay is always worth a look. Hth x

OnNaturesCourse · 02/06/2017 00:51

Most maternity things I see are dresses, or floaty long tops and that just reallllllly isn't my thing. I'm definitely more of a skinny jeans and T-shirt kinda girl so I'll check those out. Thanks!

I bought maternity tshirts from h&m as that's exactly my style too

Sparklyuggs · 02/06/2017 06:33

If you are a skinny jeans and T-shirt lady, topshop maternity is great. I personally love Seraphine, price wise it's only a bit more than ASOS but the fit and quality is much better and it resells well on eBay.

Try these..... m2.hm.com/m/en_gb/productpage.0298018013.html#Dark denim blue

Or these...
m2.hm.com/m/en_gb/productpage.0469562006.html#Nearly black

I'm 5'2" and have to roll them up twice so they will prob be a good length on you!
Also, H&M has a 20% off thing at the mo if you download their app...love a bargain!
