I'm 32 weeks and have been suffering with awful toothache for the past 2 weeks.

I've been having root canal treatment since January and I've been in agony since my last appointment 2 weeks ago and no one will do anything to help me.

I can't eat, can't sleep, can barely drink. My entire head is painful. I'm just in constant agony and of course bloody paracetemol doesn't even take the edge off.

I spend most nights crying and screaming in to a pillow. The pain is much worse at night. I can't sleep.

I've had to call in sick to work because moving my mouth and talking is so painful and I have talk all day in my job.

I want the dentist to remove it but he won't. Surely removing it now would be best? The tooth is just disgusting, there's no way it can be saved and I don't want anymore RCT.

I am so worried and scared that I am hurting my baby.

I don't want to be giving birth and dealing with a newborn while suffering like this.

I can't take anymore!!

Goodnight Crumbling. I hope you have a good nights sleep and you get sorted tomorrow.
Maybe try drinking with a straw so it doesn't touch your teeth as much.?
Big (unMumsnety) hugs to you.

SuckingEggs · 31/05/2017 01:03

So much sympathy from me. I hope you're sound asleep, poor you. Good luck for your appointment.

I had excruciating dental pain for six weeks earlier this year and I thought I was going to lose my mind. I was planning my life around when I could take the next painkiller.

I really hope you find someone willing to remove it soon. As PP said, would it be worth ringing round private dentists to see how much they'd charge? I'm not in UK and was uninsured at the time I had the tooth trouble, so in all it cost me over £250 that I could ill afford, but really it was worth every penny.

JaneEyre70 · 31/05/2017 09:53

I hope you got some sleep and get somewhere with a dentist today.

QuestionableMouse · 31/05/2017 10:01

Go back to your dentist. Sit in the waiting room and refuse to leave unless they take the tooth out. If they try to refuse, start taking loudly about how long you have been in agony. Threaten to post about it on Facebook using the practice name.

Rainatnight · 31/05/2017 10:02

I was thinking - maybe you should raise it at your appointment today and ask them to do something? They might be able to refer you to a dental hospital? I'd lay it on really thick about how traumatic this is for your pregnancy (not that you need to lay it on thick - you can just be truthful!)

Try anbesol. You can get it in chemist. It's liquid stuff that numbs your mouth.

confusedat23 · 31/05/2017 15:13

It sounds like an infection OP and I had one before I had my root canal done... my dentest works on the rule that if they do the root canal an it doesn't work first time then they'll take the tooth out... luckily i have never had one taken out and no more infections!

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 31/05/2017 21:35

How are you op?

CrumblingTeeth · 31/05/2017 23:33

I'm hurting. A lot. The pain is so, so much worse at night. But last night I managed a total of 5 hours sleep! Today I ate a sandwich!
I'm going to take some co-codamol again tonight so fingers crossed for more sleep.

I have some antibiotics to take for 7 days and an appointment on Friday with a private dentist to see about getting it removed since my dentist won't. To be honest just knowing that I can potentially be getting it removed soon is making me feel so much better. In a week this hell might be over!

Baby looked good at his scan so that's also helping me feel better. I was worrying so much about hurting him and stressing him out.

I'm going to take DC1 to the park and make a huge fuss of him because he's been so good and patient and lovely despite being bored and not having my full attention. Poor kid, it's not been a good half term for him so far so of course I feel awful.

Again, thanks for all your advice and sympathy, it helps knowing someone out there is listening and understands how much pain I've been in.

A good thing that helps is swishing your mouth out with a mix of very hot water and liquid tcp ( a few glugs worth in as hot as water as you can bear ) . Swish it round your mouth focusing on the bad area and kind of suck in where bad tooth is as if trying to draw something out of it and then spit out and repeat etc. Has always helped me and others too . Good luck its miserable . Hope its sorted soon x

Shitalopram · 01/06/2017 20:14

I am sure you have tried this, but hot water bottle..? Not a huge help but very pregnancy friendly- I found it helped me to feel I was at least doing something!

Shitalopram · 01/06/2017 20:17

Glad you might be getting it taken out tomorrow. It's worth remembering that saving a tooth costs ££££ whereas extracting one costs very little. I had my horror tooth out 14 years ago and the only problem it has ever caused me is that it is just the right sized gap for chickpeas in things like Bombay mix to get stuck in!

Rainatnight · 02/06/2017 05:36

Best of luck for today. Fingers crossed they help you out. Let us know how you get on.

user1496382820 · 02/06/2017 07:11

I suffered from this type of tooth pain which was the worse pain I have ever experienced in my life and found a low dose of amitriptyline helped. It might be an idea to google Atypical Odontalgia. If you find the symptoms apply to you then a consult with your GP about pregnancy and safety of amitriptyline or some alternative might be the way to go. Hope this helps.

CrumblingTeeth · 02/06/2017 14:23

It's out!

I'm in so much pain still but it's out.

Great news OP! Hope the pain subsides soon.

ethelfleda · 02/06/2017 17:08

Just reading all this - you absolute trooper!!! Toothache is vile at the best of times but when pregnant?? You poor poor thing!! Glad you had it removed and I hope the pain goes for you very soon and you can get some sleep xx

ElphabaStrop · 02/06/2017 18:20

Well done! Better out than in. Don't forget to finish the course of antibiotics. Are you doing gentle rinses yet with warm salty water, or not until tomorrow? xx

CrumblingTeeth · 02/06/2017 23:29

Thanks so much. This thread has really helped me, just knowing that someone out there is listening to me.

Normally at this time of night I'd be pacing about and crying with the pain but now it's just... sore. It's tolerable. For the first time in 2 weeks I am not in agony.

I slept for an hour and then read a book to take my mind off it. Normally I'd be counting down the minutes until my next dose of paracetamol.

Aftercare instructions say no gargling or swishing for 24 hours so will start the rinses tomorrow. It doesn't say when I can brush my teeth though. My mouth feels disgusting.

I'm really nervous about drinking. My tongue feels gigantic and I'm worried about irritating the socket and making it bleed again. I can't stand biting down on the cotton gauze! Terrified of dry socket too.

Another good thing is that baby has been moving about a lot and I have been able to enjoy it and it's so reassuring.

I had a tooth out a few weeks ago, The relief was immense. I hope it heals quickly.Mine did,

StarryCorpulentCunt · 02/06/2017 23:50

Do not brush anywhere near it. I used a cotton bud dipped in toothpaste to clean the teeth around it and was very careful not to touch the area.

No sucking on anything as you will dislodge the clot. That is what causes dry socket. When it starts going all yellow and gunky, you're probably past the risk of dry socket. You want the whitish yellow gunk, don't wash it away. It protects the socket.

So glad you are out of pain. The infection will probably drain now and you'll feel better.

RightOnTheEdge · 03/06/2017 11:01

Brilliant news OP! I'm really happy for you! Smile
