Maternity Jeans

Just wondering if anyone out there bought jeans whilst pregnant, and if so did you consider them a good purchase, and where did you get them? If anyone can give me their opinions it would be appreciated. I am presently 26 weeks but do not want to buy too many maternity clothes if possible. Many thanks.

I bought a pair from Dorothy Perkins, wore them tons, they were the type with the big stretchy panel at the front. I thought they were a pretty good buy, I wear jeans alot normally mind you. HTH.

jodee · 15/06/2002 16:46

I had a fab pair from Next, they were extremely comfortable I wore them all the time.

ionesmum · 15/06/2002 17:10

I got mine from Formes and am still wearing them now that dd is 4 months. Actually I'm still wearing most of the stuff I got from them (perhaps I should stop eating so many Ferrero Roche !)

Snugs · 15/06/2002 17:51

Got mine from Blooming Marvellous
Worn them through 2 pregnancies, practically every day, and still in good enough condition to wear through a third (not that I'm planning!)

Ems · 15/06/2002 18:18

Mine from Mothercare, they were crap!

PamT · 15/06/2002 18:26

I had some black canvas jeans from mothercare and wasn't impressed with them either. I normally wear a size 14 but even a 12 was huge and were still generous when I got to the end of the pregnancy.

Someone I know got some from La Redoute catalogue and they looked lovely on, a really nice fit.

bluebear · 15/06/2002 18:27

Another vote for Blooming Marvellous - I bought mine from the shop in Fulham, I had heard that there are often delays in delivering from the catalogue.. don't know if that's still the case.
Mine were soo comfy compared to all my other maternity gear. Lived in them for the last couple of months and they're still in perfect condition.

bluebear · 15/06/2002 18:29

Forgot to mention, bought them from BM because they have a short leg length.. and I'm a short arse. May not be suitable if you are on the tall side.

leese · 15/06/2002 18:31

I bought a couple of pairs from the Next directory (have'nt seen any in the shops, only thru directory), which were very comfy, and which I lived in, so 'cost per wear' was well worthwhile! I'm also petite, so shops like Blooming Marvellous and H&M were no good for me. Next did shorter fitting maternity stuff.

MotherofOne · 15/06/2002 18:52

Yup - another Blooming Marvellous fan - although a tad more expensive, these are by far & away my most comfy pair of trousers/jeans (now 36 weeks!) For some reason I don't seem to get on very well with the tummy panel ones - seem to hang around my crotch - so loved BM's bootleg jeans with side panels and button elastic. Incidently, also found the Mama range at H&M Hennes really good...

leander · 15/06/2002 19:15

I think Next do the best maternity wear it's a lot more fashionable than most other places. Also think Mothercare jeans are crap they're massive.

I bought mine from H&M for £20. Wore them through all my pregnancy. I also bought a couple of pairs of trousers from H&M too, found them very comfortable. Had a pair of jeans from Dorothy Perkins, felt really uncomfortable in them, plus they kept sliding down.

Good luck

aloha · 15/06/2002 21:10

I bought maternity jeans from Hennes that were OK, the best on the market I thought, but I felt silly in them with their big denim tummy bit - they made me feel even bigger (and I was pretty fat). I stuck to dresses in the end. In fact, the only thing I hate about b/f is that I can't wear my lovely Ghost dresses. I did see a very trendy pg woman in John Lewis wearing rather cool maternity cut offs with big turn ups that came from Formes that she wore with a sleeveless black top and chunky Prada-ish sandals. She looked great, I'd have looked like a navvy...

MalmoMum · 15/06/2002 23:51

I would recommend by yourself a nice pair of trousers now. At 33 weeks now I'm happy with being with a tummy but a lot of the confidence comes from having a mix of comfortable and groovy clothes to wear. I thought I was big at 22 weeks and that was a long time ago.

Anything drawstring just ends up below the bump and is uncomfortable. I like my H&M suedette type trousers and bought some trousers from Formes which are a lovely petrol blue. (However, the service was so bad as I felt like a leper turning up with a 18 month olf, clearly not interested in my wallet size).

I didn't buy much last time and am really enjoying what I have now.

SofiaAmes · 16/06/2002 08:57

Rozzy, I did that, a Very large pair of levis, except I grew out of them by 4 months. I grew out of my normal clothes (and I don't even wear particularly tight things) by 1 month. I have the most enormous bump (and tits) ever and no fat anyplace else. I made it through my first pregnancy with no specifically maternity clothes at all. I just bought sweats for fat people. This time I splurged and bought 2 pairs of maternity trousers at PreNatal in Italy. They are brilliant and totally comfortable. I haven't seen anything in the uk or usa that even comes close. Not terribly helpful, I know, but don't worry, you won't be pregnant forever.

Lollypop · 16/06/2002 09:04

Queenie buy a pair, you'll love'em. The are sooooo comfy. I bought mine quite late on last time as I didn't like the panel but once I had them I wished I'd got them earlier. I got mine from mothercare which were OK (may go for Blooming Marvellous this time)Dorothy Perkins had a huge panel that was hard to cover.

Queenie · 16/06/2002 11:48

Many thanks to everyone for your advice - will definitely go out and get some this week.

Hope I'm not too late to make a suggestion. I bought a pair of Blooming Marvellous boot cut jeans which look great but I wish I'd bought them a size bigger. They suggest buying your pre-pregnancy size which I did but I think this only applies if you only put on weight around your bump. If, like me, you've over-indulged more than you should and have put on weight in other areas as well (like thighs and arse!) then it's probably a good idea to go one size bigger. The size of jeans I bought are probably going to be ok as they are made from a stretchy material but I think as I get towards the end of my pregnancy (I'm 23 weeks) I'm going to find the elastic around the waist a bit uncomfortable.

I'd also just put in a good word for a shop I found in Brighton called Bump Start. They have a website, do mail order and also have a shop in Wimbledon. I bought a pair of their stretchy trousers which are fab. I originally bought a pair of trousers from Blooming Marvellous that I had to send back as (a)they had horribly tapering legs (which for a short-arse like me was not a flattering look!) and (b)the material was not stretchy which made me feel that if I was to bend over they would rip in a second down the back side. I then found this shop and the trousers are lovely. There are no panels, the whole item is made out of lovely stretchy fabric which means you can wear any length of top without showing any elastic. The only downsides are that they cost £52 (gulp!) and they don't automatically offer short leg lengths. However, I bit the bullet and bought them and shortened the leg myself. They do have an alteration service but you have to pay for it. I have been living in the trousers ever since! Soooo comfortable. Anyway, their web address is and they can be seen (for some reason) on the Passion page and they're the first pair of trousers on the page. I bought the brown ones as they're actually beigy.

P.S. I don't work for the company honest. I'm just dead pleased to have found some really comfortable trousers.

debster · 17/06/2002 10:35

Oops my link has gone wrong.

Should be Bump Start

ariel · 17/06/2002 11:11

Another vote for H&M i found their jeans the most comfortable, personally i hated maternity jeans with the huge ghastly panel at the front , these jeans are zip front and adjust at the side.My ds is now four months old and i must admit to occasionally still wearing these jeans,i suppose it shows that i must start my diet soon!!!!!

Tissy · 17/06/2002 11:59

Don't know if they do jeans, but I was very impressed by "Room for Two Maternity" (www.room42maternity.co.uk). They will do made to measure maternity clothes in a variety of styles and fabrics. You fill in a measurement chart, including gestation, select a design, select a fabric and Bob's your uncle, clothes that fit!

I got a pair of "moleskin" trousers with a stretchy panel for about £30. They fitted perfectly right up to the end, and were smart enough for work. I wore them practically every day for seven months, with a variety of John Lewises maternity tops!

tigermoth · 17/06/2002 13:41

Alternatively, army surplus combat trousers - they have adjustable waists so they are really useful before your bump gets too huge. And no, I don't go in for the whole army surplus look before anyone asks!

Loobie · 18/06/2002 11:27

does any one know where i can get maternity clothing for bigger ladies i am a pre-pregnancy size 20 but am finding it really difficult to get reasonably priced maternity wear to fit my increasing bump.any suggestions you guys?

Zoe · 18/06/2002 18:11

I was too Loobie - I went to M and S as I found that thier 18-20 stuff was fine and just opted for bigger sizes in one or two things from other shops as maternity clothing vendors appear to believe that only size 18 and under women have sex and get pregnant...

A lot of my stuff has elasticated waists anyway - I just wore things tight and was proud of my bump!!!!! It was a bit restricted towards the end and I lived in an M and S black dress which was like a sack but dead comfy in the hot weather also some linen trousers which were nice and cool

M and S dont often come up trumps these days (apart from Per Una - oh surprise, only up to size 18) but give 'em a whirl
