Hi Dinny,

I just noticed on the September thread that you're dd was born at just over 35wks. I am 35wks today and had a show last night. I've had no contractions, but spoke to hospital and they say it could happen over the next few days. I'm worried that the baby will need special care born 5wks premature.

Could yo ugive me some indication of what sort of extra help your dd needed.... if any. And what weight was she?

Also, did you ever find out why you went into labour at 35 wks? I keep thinking there must be something wrong for things to be moving so quickly. My ds was born at 39wks weighing 7lb1oz.

Any help and advice from anyone would be lovely.

Hi Toothache,

Just to reassure you - while you are waiting for Dinny.

My very best friend recently had her little girl at 34 weeks on the dot. The baby was 4lbs4 and born screaming her head off - she had to stay in hospital for 2 weeks to get feeding sorted but she was never in NICU and needed no assistance breathing. Perfectly healthy babe... Friend had to have an emergency c-section due to a failing placenta and low amniotic fluid.

I met a woman in my antenatal refresher class yesterday and her baby boy was also born at 34 weeks, weighed 5lbs5 and was allowed home 2 days later. They never discovered the reason she delivered early - a spontaineous vaginal birth.

Hope this makes you feel better.
Love
dejags

Thanks dejags. I;ve been off my head with worry since last night!!
If I can just hold onto this wee one for another week or 2 I'll be much more relaxed about it.

TA,

Just saw your post on August thread. I have been having a similar thing happening to me since 16 weeks

I get a (GROSS DESCRIPTION ON ITS WAY)...

Gush of watery clear fluid and it is usually accompanied by lots of very gunky vaginal discharge (I never really thought about it but exactly the same as a show but no blood). Have been seen by the consultant (16 weeks) and admitted at 24 weeks for this. Had every test known to man and they put it down to excess vaginal excretions or incontinence ..

If there was no blood in it are you positive it was a show?

Toothache · 07/07/2004 12:20

It was rather substantial and stuck to my back! I've had a lot of disharge this pregnancy, but this thing had a mind of it's own.

Hi, to reassure you some more, DD born at 35 wks, needed overnight in SCBU for her temp. Tube fed for 12 hrs. Absolutely fine. Weighed 5LBs, did lose some weight so were in hospital for a week, mainly to establish feeding. Also she had some jaundice.
I had a quick labour, with a show about 6 hrs before I delivered, no reason ever given, just one of those things. This time I saw a consultant who was not at all worried about this pregnancy, as he said, it'll come when it's ready!! Am now 36 wks!!!!
Try not to worry, it is scarey if they go in SCBU but at least they are looked after etc.
I expressed for a month, as DD could not latch on, this may have been due to her being early, or it could just be the way it would have been anyway.
Big hugs to you, my dear, and good luck. Just think, you could be holding that baby soon.....

Hi Toothache,

Eek! You must be worried. But try not to be! Remember, it's only a "could happen" still. But think you are right to be preparing yourself...just in case.

Um, well, mine is a very positive story - dd was born after a fast problem-free labour and was actually v heavy for her gestation (35+5) - 6.7lbs. But was soooo skinny with no body fat having been laid down. And quite hairy still (her ears still are a bit!).

Had to have a paed present at delivery but she hollered so loudly that she was allowed straight to me. Paed then did the normal APGAR checks (got 10 straight away). Went to normal postnatal ward - but we had to stay in and have her blood sugar monitored for 72 hours (hospital protocol). She was quite jaundiced but didn't have treatment. The main probs we had were feeding - she wouldn't latch on and cos her blood sugars had dropped they gave her bottle and it meant she kept refusing my boobs. She would glug from bottle though - just a determined madam, I think. But it's something to bear in mind - think if they are pre-term they can find it harder to suck and are often sleepy. So make sure you have bf counsellor on hand (if you are planning to bf).

My friend has now had two children at just over 35 weeks gestation - her recent baby was 5lb 7 (which I think is the average weight for this gest) and had to spend a few hours in SCBU as a precaution. He was fine though and took to bf with no problems at all.

I never found out why dd was early - just spontaneous vaginal birth, as Dejags mentions.

How do you feel in yourself - do you feel this is it? Lots of people do haveearly deliveries for no apparent reason - try not to worry.

Are your dates right? Do you feel ready to pop?

Keep us updated. And be prepared for a very speedy labour, if it happens now.

All the VERY best, will be thinking of you all day. Dinny xx

dinny · 07/07/2004 12:36

Wow, Littlerach - my labour six hours too. And dd wouldn't latch on. And I expressed for a month too.

Are we the same person? Does your dd's name begin with T? x

dinny · 07/07/2004 12:40

Oh, Toothache, my friend's first early baby....her waters broke at 36 weeks, they left her and she didn't deliver until 10 days later. So it may not happen now even if it was a show.

littlerach · 07/07/2004 13:10

No, it begins with M!!!! Spooky though!

dinny · 07/07/2004 13:28

wonder where Toothache has got to? Maybe she is in full-blown labour by now???

sweetkitty · 07/07/2004 14:28

She said she had to log off earlier.

Toothache · 09/07/2004 19:23

Hi folks,

Thanks so much for your reassurance and advice. No I haven't gone into labour yet thankfully. I am having some cramping pains, but nothing to speak of.

Haven't had any more show either. We're still on high alert though as I do feel ready to pop!!

My dates are DEFINITELY correct...... to the night (how sad??).

Toothache, hope the little one stays put for a while +

gscrym · 09/07/2004 19:30

Hope you're okay. Good luck with whenever labour happens.

Toothache · 09/07/2004 19:30

Thanks Angeliz. I'm 35+2 today.... so if I can just hang on another week or 2.

So glad you're OK, Toothache! Was getting worried.
Keep your legs tightly crossed!

What did they say about your show? Was it one, do they think? Lots of love Dinny x

Toothache · 09/07/2004 19:39

Yes they agree that it was a show. Even though it wasn't pink/browny tinged. It was definitely a show. But they didn't seem too concerned at the hospital! The midwife just said, "We'll put it in your notes and just keep us informed of any more changes".

So... back to the waiting game. Thanks again for your reassurance. I couldn't get onto MN yesterday!! it was driving me mental, was the site down?

Bet your bag is well and truly packed now!

Not long till the baby is term! Think positive!

hana · 10/07/2004 12:50

toothache - a friend has had both her children at 35 weeks. Neither required special care, they were a bit more jaundiced than full term babies, but they were home after a couple of extra days in the hospital. Both are boisterous health boys now (3 and 1)
Good luck when it all happens!
