Raised ALT Levels, anyone had this?

Basically this, I am speaking to my GP tomorrow about some abnormal blood results relating to liver function (ALT) and am trying to stay calm.

What does it mean if they are raised, is it normal in pregnancy? I'm scared about pre-eclampsia and obstretric cholestasis despite having no symptoms. I'm 20 weeks along now and everything has been fine so far apart from this! Confused

Raised ALT levels can be caused by a number of things, of you have taken pain relief tablets near to when you had the blood test for example. Try not to panic. These tests are done to keep an eye on you and stop anything from getting worse before treatment

Hi rosiehull4, I don't know anything about it in pregnancy but have had a raised test before and they called me back to repeat it and then it turned out to be fine again. So I would not overly concern your self, I think it can go up and down. It can raise when people have a night out on the town regarding alcohol intake but obviously not relevant in your case being pregnant. Some medicines can cause it too. Here is a link to a thread where I explain about my dp's raised alt levels

Hopefully someone else can give you a little more info relating to in pregnancy but really don't worry as it may all be back to normal when you go back for another test

I had raised ALT levels in both pregnancies, but no symptoms. I had hyperemesis and was vomiting a lot of bile. The more out of control the vomiting was, the higher the levels. I ended up being induced early both times as the levels went completely out of control towards the end.

I had extensive tests and saw a liver specialist but nothing was ever diagnosed. I also had several scans of my liver. After the second baby was born my levels were crazy - in the thousands. I had to have my blood tested daily for weeks until they normalised, but I was allowed out of hospital after four days. I was advised to see a specialist before getting pregnant again, but we're not planning any more children. Many, many doctors came to see me during my hospital stay as my case was so "interesting" but it was extremely tedious for me!

Oh and sorry I forgot to say - both babies were absolutely fine! (Well first was in NICU but for completely unrelated reasons).

Thanks all, feeling a bit less worried now. Just need to step away from Google as it certainly fuels the anxiety! Got to wait and see what the Dr says instead of self-diagnosing. Blush
