Pregnancy migraines

I forgot how bad they are.
Lost vision this morning, taken migraleve, eaten, slept, coffee, dark room. What else?
Last pregnancy I had to go for tests and was prescribed super strong codeine to manage them - rather not go down that route again.

I saw my gp yesterday who said if i get one it's Paracetamol only, a bottle of water and off to bed in a dark quiet room with a bucket beside the bed.
Praying I don't get one as I get them bad and have been on 2 Triptans for the last 4 years and I'll be miserable that I can't take anything that works lol.

From your list I'd say drop the coffee and replace it with water. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Hi,

I only found out I'm pregnant (6w) last week. Seen the doctor this week as I was worried about having a migraine and whether to take sumatriptan. Told I can only take paracetamol.

Really feeling for you @shakeyospeare I get them bad too and am dreading it happening Confused

@Lolabee We're you on 2 triptans at the same time?
Fingers crossed we don't get any!!

Lolabee · 10/05/2017 14:19

rachy my go to was rizatriptan. But a few times I threw up almost directly after taking it so was given sumatriptan to use in those instances only.

9 times out of 10 the first one worked. It was only if I was slightly late taking it because it either a. Progressed too quickly or b. I misread the signs of one coming and it was too late that I needed the back up

Hi both,

they're bloody awful aren't they?

I ended up seeing the neurologist last time after losing vision and having them 3-4 times a week. Thankfully, this one is nowhere near as bad hence me being able to actually type and function coherently.

Yeah, the coffee was a terrible idea - it used to stave off them when they'd start but it did bugger all.

The Migraleve is crap - paracetamol was useless and the pain was too pain to sleep. I just lay there, half panting and moaning like a dying cat.

I've got a big work project due in an hour so I'm hoping that this is a warning migraine and that it doesn't get much worse...

URGH.

Hope you both avoid them!

Have you tried a cold compress? That's sometimes helped me, especially if it is behind my eyes.

Cold works well for migraine relief x

Have you tried solphadeine headache? It is just paracetamol and caffeine ( do be mindful of maximum caffeine allowed in pregnancy which to my knowledge the sachet is).
The soluble action means it's works quicker.

The other thing I would recommend for non medicated relief is a cefaly device. It has literally saved me during this pregnancy and I'm normally a Triptan a week type of girl! It works by sending little sensations to your scalp and head. I don't know if they do a trial or money back option if it isn't for you?

I don't know how far along you are but you may find the extra hormones calm some migraines. My first trimester was the worst but not crazy since....I'm hoping breastfeeding keeps the really bad migraines away!!

Good luck!

Ps ice on the nape of neck may help.
