Mindful Mamma hypnobirthing-advice

I'm looking into the hypnobirthing classes by Sophie Fletcher called Mindful Mamma which are a one day hypnobirthing class for couples and looking for anyone that has done them, or teaches them and can tell me a little about the content and structure and style of class? Also, did it work or do you feel it helped? Any information would be much appreciated. I am ideally looking for any input from anyone that can tell me a little more about what to expect, whether the classes have good content, value for money, teach what you need to know to have a great birth. Any feedback very welcome. Thank you! :--) xxx

I went to Mindful Mamma hypnobirthing at about 28 weeks. I kept joking about how I was going to get brain washed, but truthfully I had been quite anxious about labour and pain, but wanted a non interventional labour and would gave thrown any kind of money towards anything that would help.

The full day class was incredibly helpful. We went through a bit about anatomy and hormones, and his important the balance of oxcytocin and adrenaline is during labour. Once I understood the physiology, I became really open to the breathing and visualisation techniques that were taught to help you relax and keep focused. The instructor also went into a lot of detail on how the partner can help in creating the right environment with you. We came away feeling much more positive, and I am really looking forward to the birth now and not worrying about lots of interventions rather than feeling scared.

It's a chunk of money, but the class is 1/3 the size of the NCT signature class I went to, and a warmer, more comfortable environment. The two classes have overlap but are quite complimentary.

We also received a book, links to mp3s that help me relax and fall asleep to, and a ton of links on positive birth experiences. The nice thing is that they don't promote one ideal way of giving birth, but teach you techniques that you can use in all circumstances in case your birth plan does not go the way you want.

So I'd say, if you know what you are doing and already feel positive about pregnancy and giving birth, then you may not need the class (though I'd still recommend it). But if you are approaching it with some trepidation, then it is absolutely superb. I'll also say that my partner was a bit cynical of hypnobirthing, but he cane away very impressed and encouraging me to keep up with the exercises.

Thanks for your reply 😉. Much appreciated. Sounds great. The one day course sounds ideal due to work commitments and the cost is lower than alot of HB courses and it sounded too good to be true. Not interested in other antenatal classes tbh just HB as I've heard nct aren't that informative. I'm looking for coping techniques and relaxation more. Glad it helped and thanks again for your help 😍

I did the mindful mamma course recently and found it helpful. It really reinforced the role of the birth partner too and educated him on how he can support and educated him about the birthing process.

I've not had baby yet but feeling very positive about it and really enjoying the downloads they provide and the breathing exercises.

Smile really helpful. Thanks so much. Good luck with the birth of your baby. Nervous and excited all at once. 😘

I did this course in my first pregnancy and enjoyed it although I did have to bite my tongue occasionally, being an obstetric anaesthetist. I would definitely recommend the hypnobirthing tracks, the relaxation track sent me to sleep most nights! The book was useful too. I'm not sure the actual course added much to the book and MP3s.

Great. Was the course content incorrect or just not sitting right with your professional experiences?

There was some statistic quoted that was just wrong, but unhelpfully I can't remember what it was! I enjoyed the relaxation side of it, and it probably helped since I managed 48 hrs of a 52 hr back-to-back labour without an epidural, but hypnobirthing seems like a bit of a head-in-the-sand approach, where they only talk about straightforward, normal deliveries. Since I know all about the other things that can happen, I couldn't be an ostrich! I found Juju Sundin's book much more useful for birth preparation.

I was also coming on to say I think the Juju sundin book is great. My mw recommended it - she was very pro natural birth with as little pain relief as possible, but she felt the problem with hypnobirthing is that when it feels very intensely painful some panic and don't have any techniques to fall back on. The techniques in the sundin book e.g. Singing/vocalising, walking/stamping etc are very good for when things get more intense. I found my tens useful as well.

I've read it actually quite a while ago as I have an interest in this kind of thing. I might have to reread it! I really appreciate your answers very much. Thank you so much. X
