Cyst found at 12 week scan

I had my 12 week scan this afternoon which seemed to be ok, just have to wait for screening results. However they found a 4cm cyst when they had a look around my ovaries. They said it looks like a dermoid cyst which is usually benign. I'm so worried about it and it came as a shock as I had no idea they would be looking for these kind of things. She said the consultant would discuss it with me as I'm consultant led. I have no idea when that will be and my mind is running away with me thinking it could be cancerous. Has anyone had this experience? X

Ovarian cysts are incredibly common, I've had them for years. Really nothing to worry about :) x

I had a cyst (although the term 'dermoid' wasn't used) show up on my 8 week scan. The doctor doing the scan said that's it's really common and not to worry about it - it would disappear on its own. I had a follow up appointment with my ob/gyn and he said the same. It had greatly reduced in size by the 12 week scan. Two of my friends that had scans recently also had cysts and they weren't an issue.

I had a 10cm ovarian cyst my 12 week scan - which sounded enormous to me! By 20 weeks it was 4cm and when I had an emergency scan at 35 weeks they couldn't see it at all. Never caused any problems or symptoms and never returned as far as I know. They are very common.

I've had 2 cysts in the last 18 months. They both dissapeared in 1 or 2 months. It's really really common.

Thankyou everyone. I don't think dermoid cysts go on their own I think you have to have them removed if the increase in size. Think I've just freaked out thinking ovarian cyst means ovarian cancer. X

They wouldn't dissappear on their own, no. But once you've had DC you could have it removed via laparoscopy, which is a relatively minor procedure :)

Oh bless you, I could have written this myself.

After pains in my right lower abdomen at around 10 weeks, a doctor found I had a dermoid in my right ovary. Then at my 12 week scan they found a larger one in my left ovary (not painful)

I'm now 30 weeks and have had a few ultrasounds (one internal and a few external) to check the size and growth. Also had an MRI around an month ago to check more accurately how large they are and whether they are growing.

At the consultant appointment following the MRI, I was told they're happy for me to pootle along with the rest of my pg, unless things get painful. Then they'll review 6-8 weeks after baby is born to discuss having them removed.

Hope this helps a little bit and you're not too uncomfortable with yours.

I had a 22cm cyst! It was a cyst adenoma. Unfortunately I had a miscarriage (unrelated I am just susceptible) so had ut removed but they said when I was pregnant they'd just keep an eye in the size whilst I was pregnant.
Did they tell you it could have been there many years ? Waiting another few months may not be a problem so don't worry

I also had a dermoid cyst discovered during early pregnancy. It was bigger than yours at 15cm and the consultant advised that it should be removed in the second trimester in case it ruptured or twisted during labour. In the end it was removed when I was 10 weeks pregnant via emergency keyhole surgery as it had twisted and was causing me severe pain.
It didn't affect the remainder of my pregnancy at all and I had a healthy DS.
They also had to remove the ovary at the same time, but it didn't affect my fertility, DD was born a few days ago!

I had a 15cm dermoid cyst, the bugger twisted and killed my ovary and my tube, but it wasn't cancerous and didn't hinder me getting pregnant which are the main things Smile

Thankyou, I completely ruined our scan day for myself and my husband yesterday. I didn't even want to look at the scan pictures afterwards. I think it was just a shock and I got little or no information. I have no problem with them having to remove it if necessary but just need the reassurance it's nothing sinister from the consultant. I really appreciate everyone's comments and support xxx
