PASTURISED blue cheese

I've just been reading that this is ok in pregnancy as long as pasteurised

Anyone else heard this?

Going to phone a midwife (not sure who to phone though to be honest)

I think even pasteurised mould-ripened cheese is considered a listeria risk. Fine if you cook it though!

Hiya blue cheese pasteurised or no is still a big no no. You can eat cheeses like feta if it's pasteurised but blue cheeses and soft cheeses like Brie aren't to be eaten cold. X

I thought Stilton was ok?

SasBel · 05/05/2017 08:32

Bake it, kills any listeria and tastes divine Grin

Soft blue cheese would need to be cooked. Hard cheese is ok as less Listeria risk

This might help: Is it safe to eat cheese during pregnancy?

Pasteurised hard blue cheese is fine.
You can confirm this on the NHS pages about what you can eat safely in pregnancy.
Runny lion stamped eggs fine.
There is a lot of misinformation out there which I find irritating (see above)
I am a consultant obstetrician so I know what I am talking about.

Although they haven't updated the eggs advice yet.

Oh nano thank you for commenting as you actually know what you are talking about.
What is your view on the occasional glass of wine? I am 7 weeks and can't think of anything worse than drinking wine quite frankly however we have a big family celebration at the end of June and I wouldn't mind joining in the toast with a glass of champagne

Nan0second · 06/05/2017 09:50

Personally I drank nothing alcoholic in the first 12 weeks. After that I had the occasional small glass of wine / beer / fizzy (less than once a week). Although the NHS advises zero alcohol, this has recently been changed from 2-3 units per week. This has not changed because the research shows that 2-3 units per week is harmful in anyway whatsoever, but because we know people don't understand units and therefore drink more than they think! I do understand units (i.e. The fact that a small glass of wine 12% is prob 1.5 units rather than 1 etc) so therefore I decided that the odd glass of fizz was fine!
Also, in other countries, the advice of 2-3 units persists!

V clear thank you

As recommended on numerous threads, it's worth reading Emily Oster's book, 'Expecting Better'. She has done a very thorough review of the various studies on alcohol, caffeine and other recommendations. Her conclusions were some alcohol is fine, so one or two units a week in the first trimester. In the second and third trimester up to one a day.
