Strong pain in back behind hip, PGP or Sciatica?

Hi all,

27 + 2 with my first and for the last couple of days I've had a pain in my back, almost behind my right hip. At first it was just uncomfortable and got better with a hot water bottle or when I walked, but today it's gotten much worse and it's really painful!

I work in an office and spend most of the day sitting down, and every time today I went to get out of my chair I've felt like my right hip is going to give way and the pain of putting any weight on my right leg means I have developed quite a noticeable (and sudden) limp.

I'm slim and never had any back or pelvic pains or problems before, and I was thinking at first it might be my baby sitting on a nerve or in a awkward place, but I can tell she's at the front of my tummy and she's moving around a lot from her movements, so now I'm not so sure Confused

It's gotten quite painful quite quickly, and I don't know whether it could be sciatica or PGP as I know these are quite common issues in pregnancy?

I don't particularly want to go to the doctors or midwife about it in case it's just a couple of days of discomfort, but it's slightly worried me about how quickly it's got worse! Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Xx

I started with this at a similar point in pregnancy and it ended up getting so bad I went to the doctors. Turns out it's SPD. It ended up feeling bruised like I'd been kicked really hard in the crotch most of the time. Sometimes it gets really painful and I can't actually move. It's really uncomfortable when I've walked too much or sat down in one position for too long.
Make a GP appointment as it's taken nearly 3 weeks for me to get sorted for physio!
A pregnancy pillow helps during the night too! Hope you feel better soon!

Definitely go to the GP and get your physio referral, for either one the sooner you can get started with some help the better it is. Both are bloody painful and unlikely to get better as you get bigger so having access to a physio and some painkillers is a good thing.

Sounds like sacro iliac joint pain which is very common ( but not dangerous) in pregnancy. It's due to pelvic girdle instability . Our trusts physio runs group sessions to teach women how to manage it.

Could be SPD! I've just developed it in the past week (am now 1 day overdue,) and its not very pleasant especially when I have to get up from lying down for too long. Abit like someone else has described being kicked in the crotch! Apparently it goes away after pregnancy or very shortly after Smile

Please see your midwife or GP and push for a physio referral. The physio will give you the right advice on exercises, moving safely etc if it is SPD. Also, not all back pain is SPD. Could be a strictly back issue made more complicated by pregnancy.

Thanks ladies for all your replies. Ended up in hospital yesterday after my hip gave way and I've been advised its most likely SPD and been referred for physio Confused

Been prescribed paracetamol and codine but feeling very reluctant to use the codine as it advises in the lack for pregnant women not to take it as it can affect the baby and give the baby withdrawal symptoms!

Hope everyone's aches and pains get better soon or at least become less annoying! Xx
