Is 30 weeks too late to be tested for gestational diabetes?

Hi, I had my 28 week bloods done yesterday at 28+6 and they rung me this morning to tell me my blod sugar level is too high (6.9) so need to come in for a glucose test, probably on Friday.

They have just rung me to say its too busy and I cant have it until next Wednesday. I will be 30 weeks by then.

My concern is if I do have it, it is another week without treatment. I asked the midwife if I should change my diet now and she said no. I'm pretty pissed off to be honest.

What are others experience with GD? Is it usually diagnosed earlier than this? This is my first, and thanks to HG my last, so have no idea...

I think testing normally happens around 28 weeks but can be later. I would advice you to eat a sensible diet from now until testing. Avoid high sugar/high carbohydrate foods just to reassure you.

I'm not sure why the midwife said 'no' to you changing your diet. It seems the sensible thing to do if you can't get tested again straight away. I would look at what you're eating and make sure it's somewhat in line with a GD-friendly diet.

It's not too late, but I would stay away from sweets and white bread and sugary drinks in the meantime to try and keep your sugar levels steady.

The 28 week bloods are often when it's normally spotted. 6.9 is not super high so they woudn't worry about it much and neither should you. It's not like your sugars were through the roof.
There's no reason why you shouldn't change your diet if you want. Just cut down on portions and carbs which is what they'll tell you to do anyway. Your glucose test may come back fine.

Thanks all. I feel like I dont want to eat anything now. It feels very stressful.

Greedy, thats good to know it isnt too high, do you know what the normal range is?

I had my GTT at 35 weeks due to large growth scans (no other risk factors so hadn't been offered as standard), so no, I'm guessing it's not too late at all. Diet-wise, the diet prescribed for diabetes is pretty healthy for anyone so it certainly won't do any harm.

I didn't have GD, I just grow super massive babies. I hope it goes well for you.

No problem with testing at 30w, my last pregnancy I was tested at 30 or 31w. No harm in you changing your diet for the end of your pregnancy though if you are generally looking at eating healthily, the concern with the GTT i think is that you can get a false positive result if you suddenly go low carb then do the test. But the 1 hr test has a really high false positive rate so don't stress too much!

Thanks all. Good to know its not too late. I think thats why the midwife said not to change my diet now as it could skew the results next week. I will definitely not be having anymore sweets, which is a shame as I have found them really useful while having HG.

Normal blood sugar levels depend on when you've last eaten. I have GD and my targets are fasting 4- 5.3 and 1 hour after food 7.8 or under. So if you had those bloods taken after not eating all night for example that would be quite high. But if you had breakfast at 8.30am and the test at 10am 6.9 would be alright. It's quite hard to say from a one off which is why you need the GTT.
