Sleeping left side

Hi all, I've read about how the optimal sleeping position is on your left side as the vena cava rubs up your right, as does your liver. So I do appreciate then when getting bigger this extra strain on those areas isn't great. But just how important is it?? I've always slept on my right, and whilst I do attempt to sleep on my left since becoming pregnant, I always wake up on my back or right anyway. Does it really matter that much??? I could work myself up with anxiety over this!

Please don't take this as medical advice but i slept on my right side with all three!

I had no choice as down one side i had sciatica.

Pommes · 02/05/2017 08:11

You and I both. Interested in replies. I find myself waking in the night trying to work out which side I'm on, in twilight confusion.

This is my 2nd baby and I was told each time sleep as and when you can, in whatever position you can comfortably get you and bump in. I'm really struggling to sleep as 23 weeks, mind running as soon as I lie down, getting up for the loo every few hours or just feeling generally uncomfortable.
I prefer to sleep on my right or on my stomach and am still just about managing it with the help of a full body pregnancy pillow!

Ive have to sleep on my right, propped up with a pillow. It hurts to sleep on my
Left.

SleepForTheWeek · 02/05/2017 08:21

I'm still on my stomach at 34 weeks - I do try sleep on my left though but it takes me forever to dose off

champagneplanet · 02/05/2017 08:22

2nd baby here too. I've always favoured my right but seem to swap at the moment each time I get up to go to the loo (at least three times!) but not intentionally. If I lie on one side too long I start to feel a bit strange.

I sleep with a pillow under my bump, have done for months now, currently 36 weeks.

Just sleep however you're comfortable, I had awful sciatica and couldn't sleep on my left and the midwife just said as long as you're comfortable it's fine.

kel1493 · 02/05/2017 08:26

I tried to, but we all move in the night. Don't worry too much.
I sleep on my back mostly, which I was told I shouldn't do. But it was the only way I could get comfy

PirateQueenie · 02/05/2017 08:27

Ahhhhh ladies thank you! This has definitely helped reassure me ☺ I think sometimes the information given can cause more problem than good! Good luck with all of your pregnancies ❤
Lilyborderterrier - I'm 23 weeks too! Due 26th August xx

i also worried about this, was told laying on back was bad

tried to sleep on left, would always wake up on back

mw said dont worry about it, if was uncomfortable etc we would wake up

s sleep how you find comft, whether tummy, back, side etc

Forcing myself to sleep on the left - supported all sides by a huge pregnancy pillow (which oddly enough is most comfortable between my legs)
I still flip over to my right probably for 1/3 of the night

HellsBellsK · 03/05/2017 12:51

I just asked the doctor this question this morning. Im also 23weeks and my hips kill me when I sleep on one side for to long.
She told me to sleep what every way is comfortable that it isn't doing the baby any harm. x

Thanks for checking in Hells :) xxx
