What to eat when pregnant and being judged!

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and am sick of people having an opinion!

I have read the guidelines regarding what to eat however I'm still getting people telling me 'I shouldn't be eating that when pregnant!'
I still eat my eggs runny as the guidelines say it's ok, I only have one cup of normal coffee a day (anymore would be decaf), I've eaten prawns, medium-well steak and yet I'm still being told 'i shouldn't be eating that.'

Am I doing anything wrong? Am I affecting my baby with my choices? I'm now starting to doubt myself because of these do-gooders! Sorry for the ranting post! I just need some clarification even though I've done my research!

No you're not doing anything wrong. There are a lot of myths around about what is OK and guidelines have also changed over the years.

If you want to feel more confident about making choices I suggest reading 'Expecting Better' by Emily Oster. It's really good and looks at underlying issues and actual risks.

When you are pregnant it feels like you become public property. Everyone has an opinion on what you should be doing and they are all happy to tell you what they think you're doing wrong. I say FUCK 'EM.
You've done your research, made your choice so own it and ignore any unwanted advice and opinions.

I'm super mad about this kind of shit today because a neighbour I have never spoken to before felt the need to berate me in the street about drinking in pregnancy because she saw me putting wine bottles in the recycling bin.

"I am making my choices about my child based on my research of current guidelines" with Paddington hard stare

Or,

"I know, it changing all the time!" Exasperated cheery smile

Depending on your preferences, and how annoying they're being

Congratulations! Flowers

My DD is four weeks old and I'm noticing that EVERYONE has an opinion - I went into Natwest the other day and the cashier told me to move my baby further up in the pushchair! Confused

I just had a stock line when I was pregnant of 'well, the guidelines state xxxx' and a smile. But honestly, just let it wash over you or you'll get really annoyed for the next 18 years.

I ate rare steak when pregnant - the only things I really avoided were alcohol, seafood and unpasteurised cheese.

It's your body, as long as you're following guidelines your baby will be okay. When I was pregnant I found a lot of people would say that I couldn't eat something and it would actually be old studies? People need to back off honestly, just kindly remind them that it's your body!

18 weeks here. I've read the guidelines and have eaten prawns (bought raw and cooked myself) had the odd small glass of wine, have had tuna and mayonnaise. There are a couple of people at work who have taken it upon themselves to police my food and drink intake.

We had drinks at work on Friday. Previously I've been offered a drink. This time onenof the busy bodies was fetching drinks and I was left out. When questioned it in a "oh so I'm not allowed one today then...? Not even going to be given the option?" They said no. Because it could kill the baby.

Hate this part of being preg.

I'm 18 weeks and drink about 3/4 teas/coffees a day AND even had a Buck's Fizz at a wedding yesterday.

You're doing better than me!

Foggymist · 01/05/2017 13:32

Ememem they said one drink could kill the baby?? Jesus Christ, people.

ememem84 · 01/05/2017 13:47

foggy yep. They actually said that. The people in question haven't had kids either. I was told by midwife that the "best" advice I'll get will be from the childless.
I've also had my belly rubbed. Had to remind one that I'm not a bloody lucky Buddha.

In my 18 weeks I've maybe had 4 glasses of wine.

I'm drinking two cups of tea a day and am then switching to herbal. This was more difficult than the wine! I bloody love a cuppa!

I'm largely ignoring it though. Midwife gave me the guidelines I'm following them but was told to not stress it.

The only think I've not eaten is steak. I eat mine on the rare side of rare and can't bring myself to have it well done/medium. So that can wait. I don't eat mussels Or oysters and adore scallops. First dinner home after baby (my belated birthday dinner as there's every chance I'll be in labour on my birthday - due date end of sept birthday early oct-) will be scallops then rare steak squeaky french beans chippies and pepper sauce. And a lovely red wine. Mmmmmm.

Tell them to bugger off. I am past being polite to people about nonsense like this. And don't get me started on bump touchers either.

When I was 36 weeks PG with DC1 I was eating sushi in a fab restaurant in Soho and got a dose of the judgys from a couple of other diners on a neighbouring table... When you stare right back at them, kind of belligerent and right in the eyes while sticking a California roll in your mouth they soon look away and mind their own business. Wink

Thank you for all your comments!!

It's nice to know I'm not the only one going through this and feeling irrate! It's really getting on my nerves!

I was talking to someone yesterday and said I will probably have a glass of wine/prosecco at a special occasion (I have 2 weddings and a hen do coming up whilst I'm pregnant) I was then told 'well you don't want to do that in case your child is born with foetal alcohol syndrome!!' I swear these people are put on this earth to annoy me!! Haha. I have my 20 week scan in a couple of weeks and all these doubters are making me worry I may have done something to hurt my baby!!

I havnt had too many people touching my belly yet, luckily I am barely showing but I can see that is going to be my next gripe!! You wouldn't rub an overweight persons belly so why do people think they can touch a pregnant womans?!

I also get annoyed with the 'this will be you soon' whenever a baby is around and 'Oh you have to go to blah blahs child's 3rd birthday party, after all that'll be you in a few years!'
Why do people think that just because I'm having a child I want to be surrounded by other peoples?! It's as if now I have to go to all my friends and families children's parties or any event that is child friendly just because 'that'll be me soon!!!!'

Sorry rant over!!!!! I'm blaming my hormones!! Haha x

People really need to educate themselves about foetal also syndrome Hmm

SarahOoo · 01/05/2017 19:49

I ate loads of prawns while pregnant (3 week old baby daughter on my boob right now!). I didn't get much at all, in fact I had people saying 'oh one drink why hurt' and 'dying your hair is fine' etc etc.

MIL looked at me at Christmas when I took some peanuts though....I explained it was fine!

SarahOoo · 01/05/2017 19:50
