I have terrible tooth ache ! I had a root canal 2/3 weeks ago and the pain has suddenly come back :(

I've just found out I'm pregnant (4/5 weeks)

We have no paracetamol in the house... can I have ibuprofen?! :(

No sorry love you can't. Can you or FH get to a 24 hr petrol station for paracetamol? Or knock on at your neighbour?

daisygirlmac · 30/04/2017 21:47

FH - DH

Cmajmp · 30/04/2017 21:48

I didn't think so :( I'll be ringing the dentist in the morning!

And he's asleep as he has work at 4am and our 1 year old is in bed too :( I think I shall hunt for paracetamol

Have you got any calpol?

daisygirlmac · 30/04/2017 21:51

Toothache is grim you have my sympathies! If you can't find anything then warm salty water is worth a try, hold it in your mouth then spit it out once it's too disgusting

MissClarke86 · 30/04/2017 21:51

You can be prescribed co codamol

Cmajmp · 30/04/2017 21:53

Yes I have Calpol in! Will that work?! And the salt water takes it off for a short period then it comes back. :( it's not as bad as before i had the root canal but it's come on very sudden this evening!

Yes! 120mg in each 5ml spoonful, a standard paracetamol tablet is 500mg.

4 x 5ml syringe = 1 paracetamol :)

Cmajmp · 30/04/2017 21:59

Thank you princeasofpower!! I will be having some Calpol now ! Even if it just takes the edge of for me to sleep that would be great! I don't remember being thus tired so early on in my last pregnancy!

Was just thinking that it might help to squirt it around the gums where it's hurting, before you swallow it.

Cmajmp · 30/04/2017 22:05

Good idea. It's worth a go !

So that's 8 spoons = a dose. It's an expensive way to do it but sure, we've all been there!!

Cmajmp · 01/05/2017 08:11

Just a little update! Calpol worked a treat ! Thank you xxx

SockQueen · 01/05/2017 23:31

Just to be on the safe side, the dose above is for the baby calpol; the 6+ stuff is stronger and the dose is only 4 x 5ml teaspoons/syringes. And get to the dentist ASAP!

SuperintendentChalmers · 02/05/2017 08:10

My doctor has told me ibuprofen is safe until 26 weeks, I have migraines so have been told I can take it until then.

Cmajmp · 02/05/2017 08:30

It was the baby Calpol... I have a 1 year old ! And I'm ringing the dentist today as soon as it opens ! I also didn't have the full dose. Probably on a baby size dose haha

superintendent noooo - it's most dangerous to take in the first 30 weeks of of pregnancy. I am a nurse and we can NEVER administer ibp to a pregnant woman ESPECIALLY in the first 30 weeks. Please ask to speak to another gp xxxx

SuperintendentChalmers · 02/05/2017 08:56

A GP has prescribed it and it even says it on the packet.... also, NHS guidelines state:

"It's best to avoid taking ibuprofen in the first 30 weeks of pregnancy, unless the benefits outweigh the potential risk to your unborn baby. ... Make sure you talk to your GP, midwife or pharmacist about the potential benefits and risks before taking ibuprofen in the first six months of pregnancy."

The benefits certainly outweigh the risks as I was taking beta blockers previously which I've had to stop taking entirely. I think it needs to be assessed based on each case, I'm sure an experienced GP wouldn't have told me to take it if it was dangerous.

Grayelephant · 02/05/2017 12:04

It's a try to avoid in the first trimester, a bit less of a worry in the second, and a do not take in the third trimester.

kiwielite · 02/05/2017 12:21

Yep, what Grayelephant said. Advise is from the UK Teratology Information Service (UKTIS), their public-facing website is www.medicinesinpregnancy.org - it's well referenced and evidence is reviewed on a regular basis. UKTIS are the go-to for healthcare professionals.
