I'm overthinking Moses baskets - please help!

Does anyone have any recommendations? I want a Moses basket where the straps don't fall in to the basket and bother the baby (actually I'll need 2 as I'm having twins).

I'd like a rocking stand (are they a good idea?) which would live in the bedroom and then I'd carry the Moses baskets down to the living room during the day for naps (first time mum so this is my best guess as to what will work for us - not really got a clue).

I'm looking on Amazon and really overthinking reviews (are the sheets soft enough, is the mattress comfy enough, does the mattress provide a good flat support for the baby's back etc). Driving myself potty. Also can't seem to find a Moses basket and stand that are the same make so guaranteed to fit each other...

I have the fear I'm going to go into early labour as it's twins so I really want to get somewhere for them to sleep asap - any opinions?

Haven't read all responses so sorry if i am repeating but we did use a moses basket as you have described and carried it up and down stairs with or without baby in depending if they were awake. It worked for us for the first two months. We also have a rocking stand. It was all from mothercare and we will be using it again with baby no. 3 ( with a new mattress of course) I would go to a shop and actual feel how soft/comfy the mattress and sheets and blankets are rather than getting off amazon and remember they will need to be washed a lot so get a few spares.

My twins were born at 35 weeks, but were 6 and 7lbs. They shared the same moses basket and single carrycot pram for several weeks. They needed each other to sleep.

I'm so pleased to have discovered this thread as I'm currently having the same discussion with my husband! Are co-sleepers worth the extra money? I love the traditional look of moses baskets and have seen some great reviews on Izziwotnot ones www.izziwotnot.com/moses-baskets, however I also wasn't aware of not being able to carry them up and downstairs... is this a real issue?

The two co-sleepers I've heard of are Snuzpod and Chicco Next 2 Me, does anyone have any experience with either? I do love the look of www.snuz.co.uk/snuz/snuzpod2-bedside-crib-3-in-1-blush/ especially the colour!

How quickly do they grow out of using them?

kel1493 · 18/05/2017 11:55

I don't like them at all so we had a crib upstairs. My ds only slept upstairs from when he came home.

DunedinGirl · 18/05/2017 11:58

We had a snüzpod too and it was fantastic- particularly good after a c-section. I'm not sure if I correct but I think they might do a twin version?

@SueAnn63

There is also bednest, which comes as a rental for 6 months then returns, freeing up the space. Friend really recommended and so that's what I've gone for. Price wise, more reasonable for something that has a fairly short life

I thought the next2me looked horrid myself and different colours didn't improve it!

SueAnn63 · 18/05/2017 15:13

@arbrighton

Amazing! I've never heard of those before, thanks for recommending, I'll have a look!

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the next2me, husband is all about practicality though Sad

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 18/05/2017 17:34

@arbrighton @SueAnn63 was t there an awful tragedy with that baby girl who asphyxiated in a bednest?
I'm pretty sure there was, something about the side panel?

OP I have never used Moses baskets I think they're a bit gimmicky, and also my babies were too long and wriggly for them. Personally with twins I'd get a reasonably priced cot - not a cot bed- for use downstairs so they can sleep together, if you have room. Two Moses baskets will be expensive and possibly an expensive mistake if they don't settle apart.

I also would not advocate carrying a baby downstairs in a Moses basket.

arbrighton · 18/05/2017 17:57

Yes Ginliness there was, as originally you could fold the side panel half way down.

They do not make them like that any more. I did my reading very carefully. There are fixing kits for anyone who has that design, warnings all over their website and they clearly acknowledge the situation

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 18/05/2017 18:02

@arbrighton oh right, sorry I wasn't being a know all, I just had a vague recollection. Good to know it's been modified. I'm currently mulling over sleeping preparations for baby number three and don't want to co sleep but want something closer than a cot so am researching.

arbrighton · 18/05/2017 18:06

No, no, I was just saying as I knew about it and wanted to reassure that my suggestion was still ok. Friend has used one and recommends it as the ultimate lazy night feeding solution. She'd have kept it if her DS would have fitted!
And part of the reason I'm going for it is space in our room and, now, suspecting that this young person is perhaps not very small so won't fit in the moses basket for more than 5 minutes! As it is, I think my bedside table will be out on the landing.

FATEdestiny · 18/05/2017 18:07

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness - that case was more about (I cringe when I say this because it's awful, given the tragedy...) parental memisjudged than the bestest itself.

Crucially, the parent has placed a 7 week old newborn on their front.
Also the benest was was angled at a gradient far greater than it should have been
Then also, the side was left in a half-up-half-down position.

So the newborn without muscle control slid downwards given the steep gradient, heavy newborn head pulled prone baby over the side. Then because the side was not flat, but not high enough to stop baby rolling out, and because baby was on belly, and also baby was unattended. So baby died.

It's not actually a fault of the bednest though, more poor understanding of SIDS risk (back to sleep, flat surface, room sharing) and not using the bednest correctly (side in wrong position, sloped too steeply).

I understand that the bednest have now made it impossible to use the crib in these dangerous ways, so the side cant be left in position and it cannot be sloped too steeply.

It must be really unfair for the damage done to the trademark from this accident. Bednest isn't any more or less dangerous than any of the other cosleeper cribs. Just it was unfortunately the one being used incorrectly in this case.

FATEdestiny · 18/05/2017 18:08

Cross posted - I see it's already bedn discussed Blush

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 18/05/2017 18:13

@arbrighton oh yes the bedside tables got the heave ho twice with us. We've got a bigger bedroom now so fingers crossed.
I agree cots aren't great for frequent early days breastfeeding which I why I am looking around, difficult part will be persuading DH to buy more baby paraphernalia 🙈

Maggy74653 · 18/05/2017 18:15

They aren't cheap but my newborns favourite place to nap downstairs is in her mamaroo.

We also have a wooden crib downstairs that rocks. It's nice because it's much bigger than a Moses basket so will last a lot longer.

Upstairs we have the chicco nexttome and I can't praise it enough for how easy it makes night times.

arbrighton · 18/05/2017 18:20

@Ginlinessisnexttogodliness
(damn your user name makes me want gin!!)

I can't put the child in the cot even if I want to, it hasn't been bought!! Run out of weekends for MIL to visit and shop with us for it and she wants to buy something so I must wait. My mum said 'i'll buy the pram, or rather you choose and let me know how much it was then I'll pay you back'

arbrighton · 18/05/2017 18:22

And FATE thank you for summarising. I'd only seen a daily fail article, which obviously didn't actually deign to explain the circumstances properly.
